NCAA Football Odds: Middle Tennessee State at Troy

Written October 5, 2009 by Kyle Hunter

Tuesday night football is back on ESPN and this week the Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders will take on the Troy Trojans in a Sun Belt Conference showdown. These two teams are both thought to be strong contenders for the league title in the Sun Belt, so expect this one to be a hard fought battle between two teams very capable of being the best their conference has to offer. The Blue Raiders enter the game with a record of 3-1, boasting a win at Maryland and at home against Memphis. Troy has a record of 2-2, but their schedule has been extremely tough, with the two losses coming at Bowling Green and at #1 Florida.  If you bet on college football, you owe it to yourself to check out the $500 match bonus going on at BetUS.

The Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders seemed to have taken a step forward so far this season. After losing badly in their season opener they have reeled off three straight victories, including two victories in which they were the underdog. Dwight Dasher has already thrown for over 1,000 yards on the season, so this is a team that can certainly move the football through the air. The ground game has yet to get going fully, but Dasher does provide a nice dual threat at quarterback because he is a very good runner as well. The defense has shown itself to be effective versus the pass, but somewhat suspect against a good running game.

The Troy Trojans have a made name for themselves by going out and playing the big boys over the last few years. Their tough non-conference schedule is certainly helpful in making them battle tested when it comes time for the conference showdowns. Levi Brown is the senior leader of a Troy offense that is quite potent. Brown is a quarterback who can throw the ball very well, but is also mobile enough to keep a play alive or scramble if necessary. The Trojans like to run the spread offense and use the hurry up offense to keep the defense on their heels. The running game is effective for Troy, but the passing attack is their bread and butter. The defense, similar to the Middle Tennessee State defense, is better against the pass than the run.

According to the current college football odds for this Tuesday night showdown Troy is favored by 4.5 points on their home turf. The Troy crowd will certainly be fired up for a nationally televised game like this one, so home field will probably be worth more than normal to the Troy Trojans. In the last 5 meetings between these two teams, Troy has had the upper hand, going 4-1 against the spread. The Troy Trojans are also 7-3 against the spread in their last 10 home games. Middle Tennessee State is 2-8-1 against the spread in its last 11 conference games, but do keep in mind that this Blue Raiders team appears to have improved quite a bit from last year’s squad. Look for the team who is able to take care of the football and pressure the opposing quarterback to win a tightly contested game in this matchup.
