Minnesota v. Michigan Football Picks & Odds

Written November 6, 2008 by Jack Jones

It has been a disappointing year to say the least for Michigan football fans, but they have a chance to pick up another victory when they head to the Metrodome on Saturday to face the Minnesota Golden Gophers. Both teams are coming off tough losses as the Wolverines lost to Purdue 48-42 while Minnesota lost with a last minute intereption that was returned for a touchdown against Northwestern. The Gophers have had a pretty solid season at 7-2 and will try to stop an 11 game losing streak in this series in games played at the Metrodome. The college football odds makers are currently thinking Minnesota will come out on top as they are listed as 8.5-point favorites with the total set at 47.5.

Michigan’s offense has had a tough time getting things done this year, averaging only 288 total ypg and turning the ball over 25 times. The Wolverines had their highest point total of the season last Saturday when they put up 42 points against Purdue. Brandon Minor ran for 155 yards and three touchdowns on 24 attempts, which was by far his best effort of 2008. He now has eight touchdowns and 413 yards on the year. Steven Threet even had a little better showing last week with 123 yards and two touchdowns. He has nine touchdowns on the year to go with six interceptions, plus he ranks third on the team with 189 rushing yards and two scores.

However, you can’t blame all of the problems this MIchigan football team have been having on their defense. This unit is allowing 30.9 ppg and 393.6 total ypg, allowing 252.6 of that yardage to come through the air. The pass defense have given up 14 touchdowns while only picking off five passes. The defense was torched for 522 yards last week and gave up a 73 yard, 54 second drive to allow Purdue to score the winning touchdown with under 30 seconds left in the game. Quarterback Adam Weber had 327 yards and a touchdown last week, also accounting for 53 rushing yards on 16 attempts, but his interception that was returned with 12 seconds left had to leave a bad taste in his mouth. He is normally efficient, with only four interceptions on the year to go with a 66% completion rate and 11 touchdowns. Eric Decker is the team’s leading receiver with 73 catches, 895 yards and six touchdowns. DeLeon Eskridge leads the charge in the backfield with 535 yards and seven scores on the year, but last week was held to just 15 yards.

The Gopher defense has been stout this year in holding opponents to just 17.9 ppg. That number seems low when you look at the 362.8 total ypg, but that is due to the 26 turnovers Minnesota has forced. Northwestern was held to 17 offensive points last week on 363 yards, but none of those points came in the second half.
