Minnesota vs Syracuse Betting Lines

The Minnesota Golden Gophers travel to Syracuse to take on the Orangemen on Saturday, September 5th. This game will be nationally televised on ESPN 2 at 12:00 EST. Both teams are coming off disappointing seasons, which has been a staple for each program for a few years now. Minnesota started 7-1 last season before losing their final five games. Syracuse went 3-9 last year, prompting the hiring of new head coach Doug Marrone. The oddsmakers feel the Gophers will get off to another fast start in 2009 as indicated by the fact that NCAA football lines show Minnesota -7 over Syracuse. If you wager on over/unders, then the Total Set it listed at 47 points.
The Gophers won’t know much about their opponents this week. New coach Marrone brings in a new system, and the QB to run that system is Greg Paulus, a former basketball player at Duke. This could give the Orangemen a slight advantage in the scheme of things, but the fact of the matter is that Minnesota is the more talented football team. QB Adam Weber and potential All-America WR Eric Decker are back to lead the Gophers’ offense. Sophomore Troy Stoudermire is one player that you will see on the field quite a bit for Minnesota. He handles punt and kickoff returns, and he also lines up as a slot receiver and in the backfield in a bunch of different offensive sets. Also making plays will be freshman QB MarQueis Gray, who coach Tim Brewster feels is the team’s top playmaker. He will be in there on Wildcat Packages, playing the role that Michael Vick is assuming in Philadelphia right now. The Gophers had the Big Ten’s second-worst pass defense in 2008, giving up over 240 passing yards/game. Paulus has a chance to look sharp in his debut against this Minnesota secondary.

Syracuse will be able to prepare for Minnesota, but the Gophers also break in two new coordinators and a Wildcat Package on offense so it’s still a guessing game. The strength of Syracuse throughout fall camp has been their defense. Now whether that’s because the offense is simply poor, or because the defense is improved, remains to be seen. This unit is led by senior linebackers Derrell Smith and Mike Stencik. Syracuse returns three offensive linemen which should help shore up the problems they had up front last year. Having a mobile QB like Paulus will help, and also adding WR Mike Williams. The latter sat out last season due to an academic issue and he came into camp with a chip on his shoulder because of it. Reports out of training camp indicate Williams is better than ever. Minnesota better not be sleeping on this team. Syracuse did pull off upsets over Notre Dame and Louisville last season.
