SEC: 9-7 (5-3 H, 4-4 A)
Conference Tournament: 0-1, lost in quarterfinals
Postseason: None

While the Bulldogs had a winning season overall and in the SEC, it wasn’t up to “standard” set by longtime coach Rick Stansbury. He had averaged 21 wins per season entering the 2010-11 year and had taken MSU to a national postseason tournament in 10 of 12 prior seasons. This was the first time that an above-.500 record didn’t translate into a postseason bid under Stansbury.

Key Losses

The Bulldogs lost some depth, as three starters departed and another key player transferred to another school.

Ravern Johnson was the team’s leading scorer (17.6 ppg) and leader in 3-pointers made (83) and attempted (206), hitting 40 percent.

Kodi Augustus was tops on the team in blocks (30), every free-throw category (114 made, 138 attempted, 83 percent) and was second in rebounding (7.2 pg) and fourth in scoring (12.2 ppg).

Riley Benock was the best e-point shooter (43 percent), led the team in steals (37) and was second in assists (70) while averaging 6.2 points and 3.4 rebounds per game.

Elgin Bailey played in just 12 games, but started 11 of them and averaged 5.8 points and 4.3 rebounds per game.

Twany Beckham played in 14 games, averaging 2.9 points and 2.2 rebounds over 16 per contest. He would transfer to Kentucky during the summer.

2011-12 Preview

Though the team lost some valuable pieces from last year, the Bulldogs expect to still be in the thick of the SEC West race thanks to a core group of seven key players – including one transfer – that should provide the foundation of experience necessary to get back in the national postseason conversation. Stansbury hasn’t missed two years in a row, so there’s little reason to think that trend will stop.

Backcourt

Senior Dee Bost is the top returning scorer from last year (15.3 ppg) who had the most assists on the team (106) despite playing in just 17 of the teams’ 31 games. He also finished second on the team in steals (28).

Sophomore Jalen Steele played 18 minutes per game, averaging 5.7 points and .15 rebounds per contest.

Senior Brian Bryant averaged 4.9 points and 3.2 rebounds and was third on the team in assists (59) while playing 18 minutes per contest.

Sophomore Shaun Smith compiled 24 points and 17 rebounds in 24 games, averaging six minutes per outing.

Frontcourt

Junior Renardo Sidney is the top returning frontline scorer (14.2 ppg) who led the team in rebounding last year (7.6 pg) while shooting 52 percent from the floor.

Junior Wendell Lewis averaged 3.7 points and 3.8 boards per game and tied for the team lead in blocks (30) while seeing 15 minutes of action per contest.

Junior Arnett Moultrie is new to the program, but spent two years at UTEP, where he averaged 9.8 points and 6.2 rebounds per game as a sophomore and 8.8 and 8.2 as a freshman.
