Mississippi State at Georgia Line

This Saturday the Georgia Bulldogs will play host to the Mississippi State Bulldogs in what will be both teams third SEC game this season. The Bulldogs improved to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play with a 27-13 win at Mississippi last week. The Bulldogs needed overtime to beat Louisiana Tech 26-20 after back-to-back conference losses to Auburn and LSU.  This will be just the second matchup between these two schools since 2006. Mississippi State won 24-12 at home last year.

Looking at the week 5 college football spreads, oddsmakers currently have Georgia favored by 6.5-points over Mississippi State.

Mississippi State:

While a lot of people will look at last week’s overtime win over Louisiana Tech as a sign that Mississippi State isn’t a very good football team, but that was the definition of a trap game for the Bulldogs. They had just lost two close conference games that they could have easily won and were likely looking ahead to the game this week against Georgia.

Offensively the Bulldogs do most of their damage on the ground (217.5 ypg) behind senior running back Vick Ballard, who has rushed for 407 yards and five touchdowns. Starting quarterback Chris Relf has added 187 yards and backup running back LaDarius Perkins has contributed 137 yards. This attack will go up against a Georgia defense that is allowing 119.8 rushing yards a game.

Chris Relf and the passing game is still a work in progress. Relf is averaging just 165 passing yards in four games, and is coming off a miserable 14 of 29 performance against Louisiana Tech last week. He has thrown just four touchdowns to three interceptions, and two of those touchdowns came against the awful defense of Memphis. The Bulldogs have been exceptional against the pass to start the season, allowing just  150.3 ypg.

Georgia Bulldogs:

The Bulldogs opened the season with a couple of difficult games against Boise State and South Carolina. Losses in both of those games had a lot of people jumping off the Georgia bandwagon early, but I think this team is primed to make a run in the SEC East.  The 27-13 final against Ole Miss is very misleading. The Bulldogs should have won this game by at least three touchdowns if not more. They outgained the Rebels 475 to 183 in total yards and usually sure-footed place kicker Blair Walsh went just 2 of 5 on field goal attempts.

The Georgia offense is led by sophomore quarterback Aaron Murray and freshman running back Isaiah Crowell. Murray has really came out strong to start the season. He has thrown for at least two touchdowns in every game, and has 11 touchdowns to just three interceptions on the year. Crowell had just 60 yards in the opener against Boise State, but has rushed for 351 yards and two touchdowns over the last three games. He had 30 attempts for 147 yards last week against Ole Miss. Crowell could be in for another big workload against the Bulldogs, as they come in allowing 163.5 ypg on the ground.

Georgia also has some pretty talented receivers that make it very difficult for opposing secondaries to match up against. Malcolm Mitchell leads the team with 17 catches for 252 yards and two touchdowns, Orson Charles is next in line with 13 catches for 210 yards and three scores, and Tarvarres King has hauled in 10 passes for 117 yards and three touchdowns.  Mississippi State is allowing just 196.3 passing yards a game, but haven’t face a quarterback anywhere near the talent level of Murray in their first four games.

Betting Trends:

Mississippi State is 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games as a road underdog.

Georgia is just 8-17-1 ATS in their last 26 conference games.

Steve Janus went 6-1 in college football last week, and is ready to help you dominate the odds for another big profit in week 5.
