Mississippi State at Vanderbilt Odds & Picks

Written September 18, 2009 by Jordan Haimowitz

mississippi-state-vanderbilt-preview-091809The Mississippi State Bulldogs are 1-1 this season under new head coach Dan Mullen. After smacking around lowly Jackson State in week one 45-7, they entered week two with the Auburn Tigers on the schedule as their first Conference game on the road. Head coach Gene Chizik and his Tigers sent a message to the Bulldogs, it came in the way of a 49-24 beat down. Auburn gained a ridiculous 589 of total offense as they seemed to throw the ball and run it with extreme ease. The Bulldogs quarterback is, well, that is a question nobody is really sure of. Both sophomore Chris Relf and senior Tyson lee both have looked equally ineffective. With the Jackson State comedy game aside, the two of them combined for 130 yards, 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions (both coming from Relf). The rushing attack is the one area the Bulldogs have a true threat, that guy is senior Anthony Dixon. Most fans are calling for Ryan Elliot to get the majority of the touches but that is false in every which way. Against Auburn, Dixon ran for 92 yards and touchdown on 20 carries. The wide receiver position is non existent for this team. Leon Berry would be their may weapon, if you so choose to use that word. The combination of poor quarterback play and lack of explosiveness from your wide outs spells for a ton of low scoring running games that are all about draining the clock. State’s defense however showed last weekend running the ball may not be an effective way to win, as they got pounded into the ground by a mediocre at best Auburn offensive attack. The x-factor in this game will no doubt be senior cornerback Jamar Chaney and highly touted sophomore corner Damien Anderson. If they can come up with big performance and prevent The Commodores from having long sustaining drives that State will have a chance to be competitive tonight.  Looking at the NCAA football odds for Saturday, Vanderbilt is favored by 9 points against Mississippi State, and the over/under for the game is set for 44.5 points.

The Vanderbilt Commodores have split the first two games of the season beating cupcake opponent Western Carolina 45-0. Last weekend they traveled to Baton Rouge and went toe to toe with the LSU Tigers. The score of the game was 23-9 LSU but the final does not show how close the game actually was. Quarterback Larry Smith had a down game going 11/24 for 88 yards and an interception. As a team they rushed for 122 yards against a top notch defense. Freshman Zac Stacy is a star in the making, he rushed the ball 20 times for 89 yards last week and caught two passes for 14 yards. Tight End Austin Monahan is another up and comer for this team as his big 6′6 250 Lb. frame is difficult to cover, wide receiver is not a position Vandy has star talent in, they have a mix of guys who can do the job. All of their deep passes come of teams loading the box to stop the run, tonight, expect that to happen on a consistent basis. The x-factor for Head Coach Bobby Johnson’s Commodores will be none other then their fabulous Freshman running back Zac Stacy. His running will be the dismay of the Mississippi State secondary. Vandy will have every opportunities to take control of this game early, if they do not do so it will be due to their lack of execution or turnover woes.  For those of you that bet college football, you should take advantage of a $500 match bonus from BetUS for new accounts that deposit $500 or more.

Haimo’s Hot Notes: Mississippi have owned this matchup ATS in recent memory going 6-1 in the last seven meetings against the spread. This year will be Vanderbilt’s turn to give State a pounding. They have the better defense and a running back that will suffocate a weak Miss State defense. All of the trends say to go with The Bulldogs here, that is a whole bunch of incorrect advice.
