Missouri Tigers vs. Nebraska Cornhuskers Picks & Odds

Written September 29, 2008 by Jason Lowry

With so many top teams biting the dust last week, the now No.4 Missouri Tigers will take their perfect 4-0 record to take on the Cornhuskers of Nebraska who suffered their first loss of the season last week against Virginia Tech. Nebraska fought hard at home, as they continued to fight back, but just didn’t have enough time to get that go ahead score. As for the Tigers they have continued to look lights out and had their worst offensive output of the season last week scoring 42 points. With the way the Tigers can score the football, even though the game is at Nebraska the odds makers see the Tigers as 11 point favorites in this one at Sportsbook.com.

This will be the first time the Tigers play on the road since their shootout with Illinois to open the season, and it starts a string of tough games that will likely go a long way in the Tigers title hopes. There is no question that this offense can score with anyone in the country, as long as Chase Daniels is under center. Daniels has already thrown for over 1,400 yards and 12 scores, and in the last 3 games he has completed a ridiculous 85% in those games. With the passing game so good offenses have to focus so much on stopping the air attack that running back Derrick Washington has scored 2 touchdowns in every game. Its really only a matter of how many points this team is going to score.

Their does have to be some concern at Missouri, and that comes in the defense that isn’t going to shutdown teams when it has to. They have been better over the last 3 games since giving up 42 to the Fighting Illini, but the level of competition hasn’t really been there. Nebraska has been putting up their fair share of points this season, and it could be up to the defense to create stops when needed. Bet Missouri -11 at Sportsbook.com

Talking about the Cornhuskers offense, its all been about the play of their quarterback Joe Ganz who has thrown for nearly 1,000 yards and has 7 of his own touchdown passes. Last week in a losing effort Ganz threw for 278 yards and 2 scores agaisnt a pretty good Virginia Tech defense. The Cornhuskers have ran the ball well this season, but were only able to scrounge up 55 yards on 25 carries last week, and though a concern its unlikely the Tigers defense will give them the same kind of troubles. It can’t be stressed enough how important it will be for this team to not only take care of the football, but score touchdowns and not field goals. Missouri will get theirs, but the Cornhuskers will have their chances to score as well.

This puts the Cornhuskers defense in a pretty tough spot this week, as they come in have to wondering what they are going to do to stop this explosive offense that has been putting up crazy numbers to start the season. For instance last week Hokies sophomore quarterback Tyrod Taylor threw for 171 yards and needed just 15 passes to do so. In order to upset the top 5 team, the key will likely be turnovers. While the offense can’t afford to give up the football, the defense will likely have to find a way to slow them down by creating some turnovers of their own. Think the Cornhuskers have the magic to pull off the huge upset, or maybe just cover the spread this weekend? Bet Nebraska +11 at Sportsbook.com
