Missouri at Nevada Football Picks & Predicitons

Written September 24, 2009 by Hector Garza

missouri-nevada-odds-092409The Missouri Tigers (3-0) pounded the Wolf Pack (0-2) 69-17 last year, and are looking to pick up where they left off this Friday night in Nevada. The match up is set for 9:00 p.m. EDT on ESPN, and latest college football lines have the Tigers favored by 7 with the total set at 60.  This game features one of my favorite plays this week.

Last year, the Tigers amassed 519 yards passing, and the game plan hasn’t changed against a Wolf Pack defense susceptible in the air. Sophomore QB Blaine Gabbert has a 68% pass completion rate with 0 interceptions and 8 touchdowns. The offensive line has done a great job protecting him, only allowing 3 sacks. Jared Perry leads the receiving core with 309 yards and 4 total td’s. If Gibbert can put up similar numbers, look for it to be a long night for Nevada.

Missouri is undefeated through three games this year, beating Illinois and Furman handily. Last week LB Will Ebner led the game with 9 tackles, replacing MLB Luke Lambert seamlessly. DE Aldon Smith has shown a lot of promise with a sack in his first two games along with two batted passes last week. DT Jacquies Smith has also gotten in on the sack action, with 1.5 and an interception return for a touchdown to boot. If the front four can pressure Nevada QB it could turn into another rout.  If you bet college football, check out this $500 match bonus with BetUS, there’s no better deal going this season!

Nevada has had a disappointing offensive year thus far. Highly touted QB Colin Kaepernick has been frustrated this year into 4 interceptions while only throwing one touchdown. After being shut out against Notre Dame, they did manage to put up 20 points against Colorado State. The rushing game has been respectable, with Vai Taua gathering over a hundred yards in each contest. The offense must do better with penalties, as they’ve already committed 15 in only two games. While they have played tough opponents, the pistol whip offense has yet to emerge in 2009.

The Wolf Pack is now ranked 120th in turnover margin at -4 per game and last in pass efficiency defense. They have played Notre Dame who leads the nation in pass efficiency, but their obvious need for  improvement is against the pass. The defense has yet to force a turnover, and they continue to give up the big play. This year alone they’ve allowed 6 td’s of 25 yards or more and 8 plays of 19 yards or more. The lack of execution is putting the struggling offense in a tougher spot. Look for Nevada to bring more pressure this week on their pass rush, as they’ve only recorded two sacks on the year.

This series is headed into its second game, with Missouri making a statement against Nevada last year. Unless the Wolf Pack can turn it around on both sides of the ball, look for the Tigers to more than cover the 7 points they’ve been given.

Garza’s Pick: Take Missouri Tigers -7

Final Score Prediction: Missouri 42, Nevada 17
