Odds to Win the NCAA Tournament Missouri Tigers

missouri-basketballIt’s been a very entertaining start to the NCAA Tournament, as the top 3 seeds in each region have advanced to the Sweet 16 and two of the four No.4 seeds are still dancing as well. I am going to put the focus on the Missouri Tigers, who came into the tournament fresh off their Big 12 Tournament win that earned them a No.3 seed in the West region. The Tigers were considered one of the more dangerous No.3 seeds, and they will have the chance to prove that this week when they take on the No.2 seeded Memphis Tigers this Thursday. The Tigers are one of 3 Big 12 teams still alive in the tournament, as Kansas and Oklahoma have advanced past the first two rounds as well. To get a little better idea at what the Tigers bring to the table the rest of the way, here is a look at how they did in their first two games and what they will have to do to keep on winning and surprise everyone.

In the first round the Tigers struggled early with Cornell holding just a 4 point lead at the end of the first half, but really got it going behind Leo Lyons 23 points and 10 rebounds to pull away with a 78-59 victory. The Tigers also got strong performances from J.T. Tiller and Demarre Carroll, as Tiller had 11 points to go along with 6 assists and 6 rebounds, while Carroll had 13 points 7 rebounds and 5 assists. In the second round the Tigers got all they could handle with No.6 seeded Marquette, as Marquette actually had a 4 point lead with a 1:50 left to go in the game. The Tigers got another outstanding performance from Lyons, as he had 18 points including a huge 3 point play late in the game. It wasn’t all Lyons, as 4 other Tigers scored in double figures, including 17 points from Kim English of the bench, who also hit 4 crucial free throws late in the game. Now its on to Memphis who really struggled out of the gate against Cal State-Northridge, but rebounded with blowout win over Maryland in round 2.

The Tigers will have quite the matchup against Memphis in Sweet 16 action, as both teams like to push the basketball and create as many opportunities to score as  possible. The Tigers continue to thrive under head coach Mike Anderson up tempo attack, as the Tigers continue to push the ball at you for all 40 minutes of play. The Tigers will score the basketball, but its more about if the defense can put up any front against the Memphis dribble drive scoring attack. The Tigers will need both Lyons and Carroll to continue to keep it rolling if this team wants to keep on winning, but this team could really be dangerous if guard Zaire Taylor can get it going. Taylor hasn’t really been a threat at all this tournament scoring just 12 points, and any more out of Taylor could be just what this team needs to get by Memphis and either UConn or Purdue in the next round.
