Missouri vs Kansas College Football Odds

Written November 27, 2009 by Rock Henderson

The annual Border War will take place at a neutral site in Kansas City this weekend when the Kansas Jayhawks face off against the Mizzou Tigers. This series began in 1891 and is the second most played in the country. It will be a battle for the MU/KU Brass Drum, a trophy that has been awarded to the winner since 1935. Each team has had their share of disappointments this season, but Mizzou can still secure an eight win regular season with a win and KU has a chance to become bowl eligible with a victory. The Tigers are a 3 point favorite.

Kansas has made the news for all the wrong reasons in recent weeks. Head coach Mark Mangino has been called out by former players who have said that he has been verbally abusive to his players in the past. Mangino has done everything he can to save his reputation, but since the revelations surfaced the Jayhawks have lost six in a row.
QB Todd Reesing has completed his third consecutive 3000 yard passing season along with throwing 18 touchdown passes. He has two talented wide receivers to target. Former QB turned WR Kerry Meier has a team high 92 catches for 931 yards and six touchdowns. He is their possession receiver and with a big game on Saturday could surpass the 100 catch mark. Dezmon Briscoe is the downfield threat for the Jayhawks and has caught 70 balls for 1095 yards and seven scores. True freshman Toben Opurum has stepped up as KU’s top running threat, rushing for 554 yards and nine scores in limited duty. The defensive side of the ball has been a giant letdown this season. They have had some key injuries and have been forced to start quite a few freshman on that side of the ball, but that is no excuse to allow almost 28 ppg.

The Tigers opened their season up with four straight wins including a 37-9 thrashing of Illinois. A loss at the beginning of October against Nebraska at home sent Mizzou to three straight losses. They have bounced back with wins in three of their last four games behind the strong play of QB Blaine Gabbert. He is one yard short of 3000 yards for the season and has thrown 22 touchdown passes. Gabbert has thrown seven touchdown passes and no interceptions in the last three games. When Mizzou drops back to pass, expect the ball to go in the direction of big play WR Danario Alexander. The senior wide out has snagged 92 balls for over 1400 yards and 12 scores making himself a prime candidate for All-American status. Junior running back Derrick Washington has been the team’s main ball carrier, rushing for close to 700 yards and eight touchdowns. The Tiger offense is explosive and is averaging almost 30 points per contest. Last year’s meeting between these two saw a combined 77 points scored and four lead changes occur in the final seven minutes of the game.

Mizzou and KU have split their last two meetings. The Tigers have secured a bowl bid, but the Jayhawks still have some work to secure their third bowl trip in a row. Both defenses have holes in them so don’t be surprised to see another shootout. Missouri is more talented in every facet though and should cover the field goal rather easily if they play up to capability. Take the Tigers to the bank on Saturday. Play: Mizzou -3
