MLB Betting Preview – 5/27

Written May 27, 2009 by Jack Jones

5/27 Baseball BettingWith rain threatening the MLB betting schedule so far this week here’s a look at three Wednesday games that won’t have to worry about the wet stuff because they’re being played indoors with all lines coming from BetJamaica Sportsbook.

First up is the Padres versus the Diamondbacks at Chase Field in Arizona. Padres ace Jake Peavy (4-5, 3.48) gets the start for San Diego, while the unfortunately named Billy Buckner (1-0, 6.35) is slated to start for Arizona. Peavy dominated the Cubs in his last start, tossing six shutout innings and racking up 10 strikeouts. He faced Arizona earlier in the month and picked up a loss after surrendering two runs on four hits with 12 strikeouts in seven innings.

Buckner made his first start of the season last week against Oakland after making three appearances out of the bullpen earlier in the year. Against the Athletics Buckner earned the win after allowing only one run on five hits in 7 1-3 innings.   Currently the Padres are -152 favorites over the Diamondbacks.

Turning to Minnesota, the Boston Red Sox continue a four-game set against the Twins on Wednesday night at the Metrodome. Daisuke Matsuzaka (0-2, 10.32) will be on the mound for Boston, and Kevin Slowey (6-1, 4.23) gets the ball for Minnesota. Matsuzaka was roughed up in his last start, which was his first in more than a month after coming off the DL. Matsuzaka gave up four runs on five hits in five innings in a loss to the Mets. Last season he was 1-0 with a 1.26 ERA in two starts against Minnesota.

Slowey is 5-1 in his last six starts and earned a win over Milwaukee in his last outing. Against the Brewers Slowey went 7 1-3 innings and allowed only two runs on eight hits. He hasn’t faced the Red Sox since 2007 when he gave up four runs on seven hits in 5 2-3 innings to take the loss.  The baseball odds makers have this one being a tight game, with Minnesota the slight -115 favorite over the Red Sox.

Finally, in Milwaukee on Wednesday night the Cardinals and Brewers might take advantage of the roof at Miller Park. Todd Wellemeyer (4-4, 5.19) is on tap to start for St. Louis and Manny Parra (3-5, 5.79) is scheduled to start for Milwaukee. Wellemeyer pitched six shutout innings against Kansas City in his last start; he faced Milwaukee two weeks ago and took the loss after allowing four runs on three hits with seven walks in 5 2-3 innings.

Parra was blasted by Minnesota in his last start, giving up eight runs on eight hits in only 3 1-3 innings. He opposed Wellemeyer when he last faced the Cards two week ago and came away with the win after giving up two runs on five hits in six innings.  Miluwaukee is the -134 favorite over the Cardinals in this matchup.
