New York Yankees (13-14) - This past offseason the Yankees made the biggest splash when they went out and signed CC Sabathia, AJ Burnett, and Mark Teixera. Even though this team has suffered some injuries that still isn’t an excuse for them to be sitting at 6-6 in their own park. The offense is still scoring runs even without Alex Rodriguez and Xavier Nady, but the pitching has been terrible. The 5.77 ERA they are sporting ranks 29th out of 30 while the bullpen’s 6.17 ERA ranks 28th. Through 27 games this season the starters have only managed 11 quality starts. If this team doesn’t get things figured out fast they aren’t going to mount a comeback in the strong AL East.
San Diego Padres (12-16) – The Padres got off to a hot start but that is a distant memory at this point. They have won just two of their last 10 and are now 8.5 games behind the LA Dodgers in the division. This team is atrocious on offense, ranking near the bottom in almost every major category. Adrian Gonzalez is the only bright spot on offense and if it weren’t for Jake Peavy and Chris Young, this staff would be killing them as well. Last year this team went 63-99 and didn’t spend any money to change the look of the team, so what else should we have expected?
Oakland A’s (9-16) – The sleeper team for some to come out of the AL West, but they are digging themselves a pretty big hole. This is the only team left who hasn’t reached double digits in the win column. The offense is struggling to get going as Matt Holiday and Jason Giambi haven’t gotten going. The A’s have won just four of their first 12 games at home. The pitching staff hasn’t been bad with a 3.93 ERA for the starters and a league best 2.66 for the bullpen, but if the offense doesn’t get going it isn’t going to matter.
