MLB Picks: Texas Rangers at Oakland A’s

Written August 5, 2009 by Jordan Haimowitz

rangers-athletics-predicitons-080509The Rangers are 59-46 on the season and have dropped the first two games of this series against Oakland. To add insult to injury, Nelson Cruz got injured on the Rajai Davis game winning hit on Monday night while stud second baseman Ian Kinsler continues to battle a left hamstring injury. Boo hoo, would be my response to that. Every team faces tough breaks and this is now the Rangers first obstacle they need to overcome this year. If Texas plans on staying the the AL West and AL Wildcard races, they need to get it together with a win tonight. The good news is Marlon Byrd is swinging a good bat while Josh Hamilton is healthy. All-star third baseman Michael Young has been raking the ball and has a .324 batting average to prove it. Expect their bats to show up tonight. On the mound for the Rangers is Vicente Padilla, he is 8-5 with a 4.66 ERA. He is also 4-1 with a 3.18 ERA on the road this season which is much better then his numbers at home. Look for him to have a very solid game tonight and for Texas to put the hurt on Oakland. Josh Hamilton will be the x-factor tonight, this is a big game, the better team resides on the road. The Rangers is 21-1 against division opponents this season, that is the best record of any four teams in the AL West. Wednesday’s MLB lines show the Rangers -119 against the A’s and the over/under set for 9 runs.

The Oakland Athletics just will not fold. They trade Matt Holliday and Orlando Cabrera which leaves Jack Cust, Adam Kennedy and Kurt Suzuki as their top three players, jeez. Amazing to think a team that can make that statement can win any games at all. But, they have and seem to have no desire to call it quits. The A’s have played .500 ball going 5-5 in their last 10 games. Chad Reinke takes the mound tonight which will be his first start of the season. In 2008 he went 2-1 in three starts with a 5.00 ERA. I fully expect this kid to get rocked tonight as he is not a hard thrower, more a control pitcher. he faces a lineup, while banged up, will be very interested in not making this three losses in a row against one of baseballs worst teams. If Oakland has any ideas of winning tonight, they will need a minimum of 7 runs. I do give them credit for being feisty, but tonight, will not be a success for the home team.

Haimo’s Hot Notes: The Texas Rangers are 6-4 in their last 10 games overall. The Oakland Athletics are 2-7 in their last nine games following a win. The Rangers are 7-3 in their last 10 games against Oakland when Padilla pitches. The OVER is 8-2 in Oakland in the last 10 games. Easy plays here as both look great. Picks below.
