MLB Power Rankings: May 7th
Written May 7, 2009 by Steve Janus
#1 Los Angeles Dodgers (21-8 1st NL West): The Dodgers have the best record in baesball, and are still undefeated at home. What could go wrong? Manny? Performance enhancing drugs? Uh-oh.
#2 St. Louis Cardinals (18-10 1st NL Central): They are hitting and pitching better than anyone projected they would.
#3 Toronto Blue Jays (20-10 1st AL East): 11-4 at home, 9-6 on the road. Young bats hitting everything in site.
#4 Boston Red Sox (2nd AL East): Still one of the best records in the league despite poor production from some of the usual sources.
#5 Kansas City Royals (17-11 1st AL Central): It’s hard to ignore the Royals any longer. Starting pitcher, Zack Greinke has been straight-up sick. Bubonic Plague-style.
#6 Philadelphia Phillies (14-11 1st NL East): Runs are coming in easily for the defending champs. Unfortunately, they are coming in for the opposition a little too often as well.
#7 Milwaukee Brewers (16-12 2nd NL Central): Trevor Hoffman has filled a gap in the Brewers bullpen, which used to be their biggest weakness.
#8 Texas Rangers (15-12 1st AL West): 5 wins in a row. Great bats, terrible pitching. Sounds familiar for this team, doesn’t it?
#9 Chicago Cubs (15-12 3rd NL Central): Zambrano injury hurts. So does the team batting average of .245.
#10 Detroit Tigers (14-12 2nd AL Central): Finally scoring runs (still not like they should be), but their starting rotation and bullpen have not been consistent.
#11 Florida Marlins (15-13 2nd NL East): Started off as the hottest team in baseball. They’ve since cooled. 2-7 record against the NL Central doesn’t help.
#12 Seattle Mariners (15-13 2nd AL West): They still can’t hit consistently, but Washburn, Bedard, and Felix Hernandez have made it so they don’t have to.
#13 Cincinnati Reds (14-13 3rd NL Central): Pitching staff has 5 shutouts. Now if their young line up could only start hitting.
#14 New York Mets (13-13 3rd NL East): 3 wins in a row. Pelfry has been good, Santana has been great.
#15 New York Yankees (13-14 3rd AL East): Still in the hunt in the AL East, but falling fast. Have dropped 4 straight and their bullpen has been embarassing.
Middle of the Pack: Tampa Bay Rays (13-16), San Francisco Giants (13-13), Minnesota Twins (13-15), LA Angels (12-14), Atlanta Braves (12-15), Arizona Diamonbacks (12-16), Pittsburgh Pirates (12-15), San Diego Padres (12-16), Chicago White Sox (12-14)
Bottom of the Barrell: Baltimore Orioles (11-17), Houston Astros (11-16), Colorado Rockies (11-15), Cleveland Indians (11-17), Oakland A’s (9-16), Washington Nationals (7-18)
