New York Mets at Washington Nationals Preview & Predictions
Written June 6, 2009 by Jordan Haimowitz
At 29-24 the Mets sit in second place in the NL East. The injuries have gotten out of control with this team as Jose Reyes and Carlos Delgado have been out for a while and players like Ryan Church, Carlos Beltran and Angel Pagan have all been hit with a minor injury so far this year. If New York plans on contending for a playoff spot they must get more production from their secondary players. Beltran is the team leader with seven home runs, that is not acceptable. John Maine takes the mound tonight pitching much better of late. He is 5-3 with a 3.75 ERA. There are some stats that will worry a Mets fan about tonight’s game. Maine has a road record of 1-2 with a 5.02 ERA. This season he is 2-0 with a 0.75 ERA during day games as opposed to a 3-3 record with a 4.53 ERA at night. I expect a wild game from Maine tonight. He will need his offense to pick him up and as we all have seen that is something you can’t count on with the Mets. In order for New York to be successful tonight they will need Fernando Tatis to have a big game, he will be the x-factor. The baseball lines for Saturday’s game show the Mets -112 and the over/under set at 9 runs.
It is very unusual that a team averaging almost five runs per game are 14-39. The worst team in baseball by wave lengths the Nats are as they have pitching that will make you squirm and the clutch hitting of a wet sponge. However, Adam Dunn has been solid this year and Ryan Zimmerman is one of baseballs best third baseman’s. The way the Mets are hitting, or not, makes it possible for a couple of long balls to beat New York. Tonight John Lannan gets the nod as he looks to improve on his 2-5 record. He has an ERA of 4.21 but has much better stuff then that shows. This game is set up beautifully for him as his counter part John Maine struggles in night road games as Lanna himself is solid at home posting a 2.25 ERA. Short and sweet here. If Guzman gets on more then two times and Washington doesn’t kill themselves in field, they will win tonight’s game. It is that simple.
Haimo’s Hot Notes: The Mets are 8-2 in their last 10 games as the favorite. New York is 7-2 in their last nine Saturday games. In the last 16 meetings between these two teams, the Mets are 13-3. So what should I do? Washington Nationals BEST BET OF THE DAY. Maine will struggle with control like he always does on the road which will run him out of the game early like usual. Lannan is solid at home and the Nationals will even this series tonight.
Jordan’s Picks: Washington Nationals +102 (BEST BET) & OVER 9 Runs (Small Play)
A solid night yesterday as we hit our underdog special with the Twins. We lost our small play with the OVER 8 Runs in the same game, but the profit margin remained high as we got Minnesota at +147. Time to get back to work. Tonight’s BEST BET is a doozy.
