Navy 2009 College Football Predictions
Written August 3, 2009 by InfoPlays
First-year coach Ken Niumatalolo kept the winning streak alive last season in the post-Paul Johnson era. The Navy Midshipmen posted a sixth straight winning season and won the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy for a sixth straight year as well. Another bowl season is expected in 2009 for the Midshipmen, who have 13 consecutive wins over their service academy rivals. The schedule is tougher than ever with eight bowl opponents that include Ohio State, so this team will be tested greatly in Niumatalolo’s second year on the job. Offense: Ricky Dobbs has been touted as the best quarterback of the current triple-option era. His time has come, and now he’ll have two seasons as the starter to live up to the hype. Fans got an early glimpse of Dobbs last season due to injuries to Navy’s starter and backup at QB. He started just one game and appeared in six others, but he still ranked third on the team with 495 rushing yards and second in scoring with eight touchdowns. He had a spectacular debut against SMU last season, rushing for 224 yards and four touchdowns in a 34-7 victory. He is powerful and fast to be able to run over defenders and also break away in the open field. He is also, by far, the best passer in the triple-option era. He is blessed with a strong arm, which has had coordinator Ivan Jasper talking about throwing the ball downfield more this season.
Navy has to replace three of its best skill players in fullback Eric Kettani, slot back Shun White and receiver Tyree Barnes. There are no proven performers at any of these three key spots, which will put even more pressure on Dobbs to carry the load. Alexander Teich, who won the starting fullback job in the spring, has just seven career carries. He’s smaller than your typical Navy fullback, but he’s quicker and more elusive. Slot back Bobby Doyle made some big plays in 2008, scoring three touchdowns and averaging 10.6 yards on 19 carries. Sophomore Marcus Curry will push him for starting duties through the fall.

Defense: Navy allowed a solid 22 points/game last season. With seven starters and a bevy of backups returning, this unit should be even better in 2009. Nose guard Nate Frazier is a dominant force in the middle, taking up double-teams on almost every snap. He tied for the team lead with nine tackles for loss a year ago. Jabaree Tuani replaced an injured Michael Walsh at left end five games into the season last year. He ended up earning second-team Freshman All-American honors by two different publications. Tuani had 42 tackles, nine for loss, and forced three fumbles in his first three starts to make an immediate impact.
Inside linebacker Ross Pospisil returns for his senior season after leading the team with 106 stops last year. He was named the defensive captain in the spring because he never takes plays off and he can cover receivers in the open field. With so much depth at inside linebacker, the Midshipmen were able to move senior Clint Sovie to outside backer in the spring. Safety Wyatt Middleton, who is a versatile player with a nose for the football, might be Navy’s most complete defender to lead an inexperienced secondary.
