Football Betting Odds: Navy at Notre Dame

Written November 4, 2009 by Jordan Haimowitz

The Naval Academy has one of its best teams in recent years. They are 6-3 this season with good wins against Wake Forest and Air Force. Quarterback Ricky Dobbs is probable for this game with a Knee injury but all signs seem to be a go for this weekend’s rivalry game vs the Irish. Dobbs has thrown for 618 yards with 3 passing touchdowns and 2 interceptions while adding 595 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns on the ground. He is a very explosive quarterback that should cause Notre Dame problems not only on the ground but also through the air. Running back Vince Murray has collected 638 rushing yards and 4 touchdowns this season and has really picked up the wishbone well. Mario Washington is the big play wide receiver for this team and will be the x-factor in today’s game. The running game will obviously be the focal point but I expect head coach Ken Niumatalolo to attack an Irish secondary that is one of the nation’s worst. The defense Navy has been stellar allowing 21 points per game and only 316 yards of total offense. Look out here as Navy matches up well against Charlie Weiss and the Irish. The Midshipmen have a great secondary to go up against Notre Dame’s passing attack. Navy gives up less points per game, allows 68 less yards total per game and control time of possession better then their opponent today.  The current NCAA football lines show Notre Dame favored by 11 points with a total set for 55.5.

Notre Dame is coming off a 40-14 victory vs Washington State which has the worst pass defense in the nation (a game they didn’t cover). Jimmy Clausen will look to improve his Heisman chances and future NFL draft stock when he faces a very good Navy secondary, one of the best they’ve had in quite some time. Clausen’s numbers are gaudy, he has thrown for 2,318 yards with an amazing 18 touchdowns to only 2 interceptions. The factor back for this team is Armando Allen, the Irish’s leading rusher is suffering from an ankle injury that is worse then people first thought. He is expected to play but I doubt he’ll be much of a factor. Allen has rushed for 514 yards with 3 touchdowns this season. Onto the dynamic receivers for this team, Golden Tate has been electric catching 56 passes for 927 yards and 9 touchdowns, he has been if not the best, one of the top 5 wide outs in the nation. Today, Michael Floyd makes his return in a limited role after suffering a collarbone injury earlier in the year, do not expect him to be a huge factor. However, the x-factor today will be soon to be NFL tight end Kyle Rudolph who has caught 31 passes for 346 yards and 3 touchdowns making several game changing catches. Defensively, Notre Dame is very spotty. They allow 23 points per game while giving up 384 yards threw the air to opponents. This is not your every day Navy team who runs every play, Dobbs will burn them deep if they play with no intensity. So, the secondary better show up or we will be talking about another major blunder in South Bend.  Get serious about betting college football this season with a $500 match bonus from BetUS.

Haimo’s Hot Notes:

NAVY are 55-24 ATS in their last 79 road games.

Road team is 13-1 ATS in their last 14 meetings.

Midshipmen are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 games as an underdog of 10.5 or greater.

Notre Dame are 8-20 ATS in their last 28 games after allowing less than 170 yards passing in their previous game.

Fighting Irish are 3-8 ATS in their last 11 games following a SU win of more than 20 points.

Fighting Irish are 5-15 ATS in their last 20 home games vs. a team with a winning road record.

***UPSET ALERT*** Navy can match up with the offensive fire power the Irish bring to the table as their defense is stout. The wishbone should be very successful in this game and as I stated above, Notre Dame has a very exploitable defense. Look for this to be a close game, a lower scoring one then most people think. In the end I have The Naval Academy pulling off a marquee road win in South Bend. Get my premium picks for this weekend on my capper’s page.

Nothing is certain, but I would bet my life ND comes away with a W. I don’t think they will cover, but if you take the money line against ND… well, I told you so.

    Mike,

The feedback is appreciated. It is certainly a reach considering the offensive talent differential. However, The Irish have struggled on defense in a big way and Navy hs a QB that can throw down the field. Ball control will be key.
