Navy vs. Notre Dame Football Betting Odds & Spread

Written November 12, 2008 by Jason Lowry

A lot of the talk this week is surrounding the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and their head coach Charlie Weis, and just how much longer he is going to be given to turn this football team around, and Weis is hoping to do just that as he is taking over the play calling duties this week. The Irish will travel to take on the Navy Midshipmen, who are having a pretty solid season at 6-3, and are coming off a 33-27 over Temple at home. Even though Navy has had some big wins this season over teams like Rutgers and Wake Forest, the oddsmakers still have the Fighting Irish 3.5 point favorites on the road over Navy at Bookmaker.com

Notre Dame comes into this one off one of the teams most disappointing losses of the season, as they were shutout on the road by Boston College 17-0. With just 3 games remaining Navy still needs another win to be bowl eligible, and you know they don’t want to wait around on that. Last week the offense out gained Boston College by nearly 50 yards, but were minus five in the turnover battle, as Jimmy Clausen had one of his worst days throwing 4 interceptions. There are few if any teams that can win a football game giving up 5 more turnovers than their opponent, so that is task 1 for the offense this week, but all eyes will be on the effect Weis’s play calling has on the teams ability to move the football.

The Fighting Irish defense didn’t play bad last week, but were unable to help the offense out and create any turnovers to answer all the take aways the Eagles were making. Boston College had just 246 yards of total offense, and had no passing game at all, as the Irish defense allowed Chris Crane to complete just 9 of 22 passes for 79 yards. It won’t matter how good the pass defense is this week, as the Midshipmen run the football more than anyone. If the Irish can keep the run game in check they should win this football game. Navy comes in winners of two straight, and last week they had to come back from 20 down to pull off the victory. The Midshipmen got on the board first with a 2 yard run from Kaipo-Noa Kaheaku-Enhada, but gave up 27 unanswered points, and used a 20 point 4th quarter to tie the game and send it into over time. We already mentioned the Midshipmen love to run the football, and last week they ran it 57 times for 293 yards and 2 scores, including the game winning run by quarterback Ricky Dobbs in overtime. The offense can’t afford to bank on a comeback like that too often, and we think its very important for this team to get off to a good start if they want to win this one.

The Midshipmen defense might of had the biggest play of the game, as Clint Sovie took a fumble back 42 yards in the the 4th quarter to tie the game at 20 and eventually put this team into overtime. The defense was stellar against the run giving up just 69 yards on 37 carries, and if they can put that same kind of performance against the Fighting Irish this game is going to be a battle down to the wire. Don’t expect this defense to force Clausen into another 4 interception performance, but they could make a couple big turnovers that could win them the game. Bet Navy +3.5 at Bookmaker.com
