NBA Basketball Betting Tips

Written December 12, 2008 by Evan Altemus

nba-betting-121208Knowing the latest news and injury information is essential to NBA handicapping success.  The NBA season is long and full of trends throughout.  Each team goes through ups and downs due to injury, turmoil, improved play, etc.  Let’s review the current NBA information that is affecting these teams.

New Jersey – Point guard Devin Harris has played outstanding basketball, resulting in the Nets having much more success than expected to start the season.  They have been an excellent underdog, as New Jersey is still under-rated from a point spread perspective, especially on the road.

Philadelphia – This team has struggled this season, despite the addition of Elton Brand in the off-season.  The Sixers success from last season was due to their up-tempo style of play, but Brand doesn’t fit well into that type of system.  Until this team plays better with Brand, they will continue to struggle.

Cleveland – The Cavaliers have won nine straight games by double digits, completely blowing out weaker opponents.  They are a serious contender in the Eastern Conference, and they will be a great point spread team at home against the best teams in the league.

New York – The Knicks have quietly played decent basketball this season, even with a team in a transition mode.  They are already 9-12 straight up this season, and their young players have bought in to Mike D’Antoni’s system.  This team will be a good point spread choice at home, but they will still have problems on the road against the better teams in the league.

Toronto – They have struggled mightily without their point guard of last season, T.J. Ford.  Jose Calderon hasn’t been able to run the offense, and Jermaine O’Neal hasn’t played as well as expected.  The Raptors are a better team than their record, and they should improve as the season goes on.

Milwaukee – The Bucks have quietly been the NBA’s second best point spread team this season.  They are only 9-14 straight up, but their against the spread record is 15-7.  Milwaukee has a high scoring offense, capable of blowing out lesser teams at home, but they struggle against better teams both at home and on the road.  Consequently, the Bucks are able to cover spreads but lose outright both at home and on the road.  This team is worth a look as an underdog at home, especially against better teams.

Detroit – The Pistons have actually played worse since trading for Allen Iverson.  Their offense has been stagnant, and their best player’s production has decreased.  This team is lacking effort and has no identity.  They have shuffled around their line-up several times in an attempt to find something that works.  The Pistons are a bet against team until things dramatically change.

Denver – This team is dramatically better since the trade for Chauncey Billups.  They have improved on both the offensive and defensive ends, and their team cohesiveness has gotten better.  Denver will be outstanding as an underdog and small home favorite, but they are not good enough to consistently cover spreads as a large favorite.

San Antonio – The Spurs may have dramatically improved after Tony Parker’s and Manu Ginobli’s injuries.  They were forced to play several young players, who have sparked this supposedly aging team.  Now that they have Parker and Ginobli back, San Antonio has been an offensive machine.  Look to take them in games against the best teams in the league.
