NBA Power Rankings: Lakers, Celtics, & Cavs Still Dominate
Written February 19, 2009 by Jay Horne
1. L.A Lakers (43-10)
The Lakers started back from the All-Star break on good terms with a 96-83 win over Atlanta on Tuesday night. Los Angeles also backed that up with a win over Golden State last night 129-121 making it their 9th win in the last 10 games. Last night Kobe Bryant knocked down 30 points while Pau Gasol sported a double-double with 24 points 14 rebounds in the winning effort.
2. Boston Celtics (44-11)
The Boston Celtics will not officially get back to the floor since the All-Star break until tonight’s match-up with the Utah Jazz. The rest will probably have Boston with some fresh legs and that has usually been a bad sign for opponents.  Bet on the Celtics at Utah Thursday.
3. Cleveland Cavaliers (41-11)
The Cavaliers took care of business in their return to the floor last night against Toronto by a score of 93-76. Zydrunas Ilgauskas scored 22 in the event. Cleveland will now get settled to take a trip to Milwaukee on Friday night before returning home for two straight games where they have been all too dominant this season.
4. Denver Nuggets (37-17)
The Nuggets have now won 3 straight games with their win over the 76ers last night 101-89. Carmelo Anthony posted another solid performance with 26 points and 14 rebounds. Anthony is averaging 23 points over the last 5 games and Denver is rolling winning 7 of the last 8 games.
5. Houston Rockets (33-21)
Yao Ming continues to put up solid numbers and all of the Rockets players contributed well in their 114-88 blowout over New Jersey on Tuesday night. Ming had 20 points 12 rebounds to score his 3rd straight double-double. Houston trails San Antonio by 3 games heading into the latter part of the season.
6. San Antonio Spurs (35-17)
The Spurs got back on the floor Tuesday night against the Knicks. Unfortunately, the game resulted in their 2nd straight close defeat as they loss 112-108 in overtime. San Antonio is thought by many to be the only team to be able to challenge the Lakers in the West. However, if they do not get over their inconsistency they may not even win the Southwest. Bet on the Spurs at Detroit tonight.
7. Orlando Magic (39-14)
Jameer Nelson is still hopeful to return to play even with his injured shoulder that needs surgery to repair a torn labrum. For the Magic, they have not been the same without him. Orlando was blown out by New Orleans last night by a score of 117-85. Orlando has now lost 6 out of their last 10 games.
8. Dallas Mavericks (32-21)
Dallas responded from the bitter taste left before the all-star break when they were beaten by Boston 99-92. The Mavericks had a big win against New Jersey last night 113-98. The Mavericks put on impressive shooting display knocking down 10-14 (71%) from 3 point range and 55% as a team from the floor with 4 players with 20 plus points.
9. Portland Trailblazers (33-20)
The Trailblazers got back to their winning ways last night against Memphis after in their first game back from the break. Portland has now won 8 of their last 11 games and is 4 games behind Denver in the Northwest standings.
10. New Orleans Hornets (32-20)
The Hornets finally scored a big win last night blowing out the Magic. Safe to say the Southwest is the best division top to bottom and the Hornets will need to make a run as they sit in the #3 spot 3 games behind. Chris Paul had 36 points and 10 assist last night to lead the Hornets to the 117-85 win.
