NBA Power Rankings: Lakers Rule, NBA Drools

Written March 12, 2009 by Jack Jones

nba-power-rankings-0312091. Los Angeles Lakers – The Lakers now own the best record in basketball at 51-13.  The key for LA?  They are the best team in the NBA on the road at 22-9 this year.  Fun Fact:  The Lakers are now a full 37 games ahead of the Sacramento Kings in the Pacific.

2.  Cleveland Cavs – The Cavs are heating up again (did they ever cool off?) and have notched wins in 8 of their last 10 games overall.  Part of me wishes they were still undefeated at home, but I guess having just one loss in 29 home games is okay.

3.  Boston Celtics – Boston is apparently missing Kevin Garnett as they’ve lost 2 straight and are only 5-5 in their past 10 games.  They’ve already locked up a playoff spot in the East, but the sooner KG gets back the better.  Bet on or against the Celtics this week with BetUS.

4.  Orlando Magic – There are already three teams that have clinched a playoff spot in the East and the Magic are one of them.  You have to be impressed with Orlando, who already has 47 wins after earning just 52 wins all of last year.

5.  San Antonio Spurs – San Antonio remains solid in the Southwest, 2.5 games ahead of the Houston Rockets.  The Spurs have won 3 in a row and 7 of their last ten to get to this point, but it will be interesting to see how they hold up as the season wears on.

6.  Houston Rockets – Houston had won 3 games in a row before last night’s disappointing loss to the Lakers.  They’ll face the San Antonio Spurs at Houston in a key match up on March 14th.

7.  New Orleans Hornets – Just behind the Spurs and the Rockets are the New Orleans Hornets in the Southwest.  The Hornets have been blistering hot, winning 8 of their last 10 including a stretch of 7 games in a row.  It’s going to be a fight to the finish in the Southwest and the Hornets should be in the race until the end.

8.  Utah Jazz – If the Jazz could figure out how to win on the road, they’d be a force in the West.  The Jazz are just 13-18 this season as the visitor while they’ve managed a 28-6 record at home, which is currently just enough to put them ahead of Portland and Denver in the Northwest.  Bet on the Utah Jazz this season at Sports Interaction.

9.  Portland Trail Blazers – Portland comes into Thursday just a half of a game out of first place in the Northwest.  The Blazers haven’t played as well against their division opponents as the Jazz or the Nuggets (7-5 compared to 9-3, 9-3, respectively), but their play against the rest of the league has kept them in contention.

10.  Dallas Mavericks – The Mavs are heating up at the right time.  They’ve won 3 straight and 7 of their last 10 to put them right in the thick of things in the log-jam that has become the Southwest.  The Mavs don’t play anyone in their division for at least their next 9 games, what they can hope for is to keep winning while the rest of the division beats up on each other.
