NBA Power Rankings: Summer 2009

Written July 21, 2009 by Jack Jones

nba power rankingsI was taking a look at the Hoop Doctors NBA Power Rankings for the Summer of 2009 and feel like it’s a pretty quality read.  Of course I have some beef with their selections but when you are thinking about the NBA in July you can’t really see who is playing well out on the court, you are only left with talking about it.

It starts off with the San Antonio Spurs being the top team, which I have to disagree with.  This team is getting old with Duncan and Ginobili being past their prime.  They did add Richard Jefferson and Antonio McDyess to the mix, but McDyess is getitng up there in age and I don’t see him being the upgrade they need.  This team will be good, but the frontrunners for the NBA title?  I disagree and at +1400 over at BetUS, the odds makers disagree as well with the Spurs being listed with the 6th best odds to win next year’s title.  Then again maybe that’s a good bet with those kind of NBA odds.  If you are going to bet this year, check out BetUS which gives our readers a $500 signup bonus for a deposit of $500!

The Lakers are third, which I understand with the uncertainty surrounding Lamar Odom, but Luke Walton says Odom will be in the purple and gold this winter.

Listing the Orlando Magic as the second best team also seems like a small stretch to me, since I think the Cavs made some nice additions (even with Shaq getting way up there in years) and the Boston Celtics adding Rasheed Wallace to the mix (again, getting up there so Boston has one more chance for another title with their core).

The Dallas Mavericks at 6 was a bold prediction as the odds makers have them at +4000, but getting Shawn Marion should give Dallas a nice boost.  The problem with this team is that Jason Kidd is getting old and they just don’t play any defense at all.

I think it might be a little harsh to throw the Houston Rockets all the way down to no. 27 but without Yao Ming this team is going to be struggling.  Trevor Ariza had a nice playoff run, but he’s no Ron Artest and of course you can’t plan on having McGrady in the lineup.

The Miami Heat down at 19 should probably get a little more credit as well.  Wade is a top five player in the league and Beasley will be much improved in his second season.  Riley is trying to make a move in landing either Odom or Boozer and if either of those two end up in South Beach this team will be contenders.

Anyway, if you are missing your NBA betting season as much as I am, the article by the Hoop Doctors is definitely worth a look and remember to stop back next season for another exciting run of NBA picks from our handicappers.
