Houston comes in off an impressive 104-89 win over the New York Knicks on Wednesday, and overall the Rockets have been playing pretty solid of late, as they are 4-3 in their last seven, with two of the losses coming in overtime.
The Rockets are just 8-14 on the road this season, but they have won at Boston and Atlanta in their last two games away from home, and have to be confident they can top the Grizzlies on their home court.
Houston had six different players score in double figures against the Knicks, led by 21 points from Kevin Martin and 18 points from Kyle Lowry. Martin and Lowry have been outstanding against the Grizzlies this season. Lowry has set a career high with 28 points in the first meeting, and then set a career-high in assists with 18 in the second game. Martin is averaging 31 points in two games against Memphis.
The Grizzlies come in having lost two straight, as they blew a 15 point third quarter lead against the New Orleans Hornets on Wednesday. While Memphis lost their last home game 96-84 to the Bulls, they had won their previous four, including wins over Dallas, Utah, and Oklahoma City.
Rudy Gay and Mike Conley each had 22 points in the loss to the Hornets. Zach Randolph had 17 points and 10 rebounds, and Marc Gasol added 12 points and 10 boards. The Grizzlies shot 46% from the field, but managed just 16 points in the third quarter, and that ended up being the difference.
Memphis hasn’t played all that great on the defensive side of the ball lately, and if they are going to get things turned around against the Rockets they have to step up and really get after it on that side of the ball.
Houston has won three straight at Memphis during their dominant run, winning by an average of 14.7 a game, and that right there is reason enough to take the points and jump all over the Rockets tonight. Houston knows they have a tough game against the Magic tomorrow night, but understand they need to win this game.
