NBA Spreads: New Jersey Nets at New Orleans Hornets

Written by -

The New Jersey Nets will look for their first three-game winning streak in nearly two years when they take on the New Orleans Hornets tonight at New Orleans Arena. The Nets beat Atlanta at home on Sunday 89-82, and then last night went on the road and beat Memphis 101-94 for just their third road win of the season. New Jersey has now won three of their last four since losing eight in a row. As for the Hornets things haven’t been going so good lately. New Orleans has lost two straight, and are just 5-11 since starting the season 11-1. The Hornets however are playing much better at home this season, as they are 11-3 in front of their home crowd. Our NBA spreads have the Hornets favored by 8.5-points over the Nets at home.

The Nets are getting some real nice play out of Brook Lopez and Kris Humphries of late. Lopez had 26 points and six rebounds against the Grizzlies last night, and has scored at least 20 points in five of the his last eight games. Humphries had 12 points and 11 rebounds last night, and its the third time in the last four games that he has put up those exact stats.

The Nets recently acquired Sasha Vujacic in a trade for the Lakers, and he has been a nice addition since coming over. Vujacic scored 16 points on 6 of 8 shooting last night, and has been a real spark off the bench.

I think the for the Nets to take that next step they need Devin Harris to be more of a consistent scoring threat. The Nets are 7-2 in games where Harris scores at least 20 points.

Chris Paul is doing everything he can to keep the Hornets in contention, and you just have to think that this team is going to get on another roll like they did to start the season. David West has been playing better of late, averaging 22 points and eight rebounds over the last five games, but the Hornets need more out of guys like Trevor Ariza, who is averaging just 8.6 over his last five games.

The Hornets just aren’t getting the production from their bench players to be consistent night in and night out. I really think the Hornets need another piece to seriously content in the West, and it’s hard telling if they will make any moves.

I still like the Hornets to beat the Nets at home tonight, and I think they are a safe bet against the spread as well. The Hornets beat Utah 100-71 in their last home game, and will be hungry for a win after losing two straight on the road.
