NBA Spreads: San Antonio Spurs at New York Knicks

Written by -

The San Antonio Spurs (29-4) will look to become the first team to reach 30 wins when they take on the New York Knicks (19-14) at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night. The Spurs come in off a 101-74 win over the Oklahoma City Thunder on Saturday, for their fourth straight win. The Knicks won 98-92 at home against the Indiana Pacers, snapping a two game losing streak. Tip-off is set for 7:30 and our NBA spreads indicate that the Spurs are favored by 6-points over the Knicks.

The San Antonio Spurs are off to one of the best starts in NBA history, yet their isn’t much hype surrounding this team right now, as so much attention is being given to the Miami Heat and the incredible run they are on right now.

After averaging just 12.5 points over the month of December, Tim Duncan came away with a game-high 21 points to go along with nine rebounds in the lopsided win over the Thunder. Tony Parker had 14 points and 10 assists, and George Hill came off the bench to score 16 points in just 21 minutes of work. Manu Ginobili leads the Spurs, averaging 18.7 a game, but had just 9 points in the win over Oklahoma City.

San Antonio has really been effective on the defensive side of the ball lately. The Spurs are allowing just 82.3 points and 37.1% shooting during their current four-game winning streak, but will definitely be tested by the Knicks, who come into this game averaging 107.2 points per game.

The Knicks have to be hoping their new addition of Amare Stoudemire will help them cure their struggles against the Spurs. New York is just 1-9 against the Spurs since the 2005-06 season, but San Antonio has had their troubles stopping Stoudemire in the past. Last year Stoudemire averaged 32.7 points and 11.3 rebounds against the Spurs in three games.

This is a big game for the Knicks, who have struggled against the elite teams this season. New York is just 9-7 at Madison Square Garden, but have won three straight at home, including wins over the Thunder and the Chicago Bulls. New York may however be without starting forward Danilo Gallinari, who left the Knicks win over the Pacers in the fourth quarter with a sprained left knee.

I think you have to roll with the Knicks at home, as they are too good of a team to be getting 6 points on their home court. I think the fast pace will give the Spurs some trouble, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Knicks win this game outright.
