NC State 2009 Football Predictions

Written June 26, 2009 by InfoPlays

2009 NC State Football PredictionsTom O’Brien is a very disciplined coach, and it showed in his team last season, especially in quarterback Russell Wilson. But a repeat performance in reaching another bowl game may be asking a lot. More impact plays on defense, though, should deflect some pressure from Wilson and keep the Wolfpack in the Atlantic race into the season’s final month when the schedule really start to pick up. NCAA football lines have the Wolfpack listed at +800 to win the 2009 ACC Title.

Offense: ACC Rookie of the Year, Russell Wilson, burst onto the scene in 2008 after a juggling act at quarterback to start the season. The NC State Wolfpack have a dynamic player on their hands, but he didn’t fully commit to football and was in and out of spring practice because his double athletic life called for him to play second base on the baseball team. Wilson threw 17 touchdowns last season to just one interception. He passed for 1,955 yards and rushed for 388 more. The bonus for NC State was that red shirt freshman Mike Glennon drew raves all spring and should be the ready replacement if Wilson were to get banged up or if the offense needs a spark.

The offensive line’s first unit is solid. Three starters return in left tackle Jake Vermiglio, center Ted Larsen and right tackle Jeraill McCuller. There is a steep drop-off after these three on the depth chart, though. Tailback Jamelle Eugene is first in line to replace draft pick Andre Brown, but he suffered a shoulder injury that limited him in spring drills. With Eugen out, former North Caroline prep Player of the Year, Toney Baker, put his best foot forward in his senior year. Baker recovered from two major knee surgeries. Wide receivers Jarvis Williams and Owen Spencer are Wilson’s top targets outside. Williams had 26 catches for 432 yards and four TD’s in ‘08, while Spencer recorded 31 grabs for 691 yards and five scores.

Defense: The Wolfpack held their opponents in check last season despite being special in any statistical ranking defensively last season. Three of the final four regular-season opponents were held to 17 points or less. The defensive line was responsible for much of that success. Tackle Alan-Michael Cash and ends Shea McKeen and Willie Young have plenty of experience, combining for 23.5 tackles for loss and 12.5 sacks last season. Young is an NFL prospect after leading the team with 12.5 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks. Senior defensive tackle Leroy Burgess could take off if his spring dominance carries over into September.

The safety position is up for grabs. The free safety job was a four-man battle in the spring. Junior strong safety Javon Walker, who was a game-changer before suffering a season-ending ACL injury in 2007, will be ready for contact drills in the fall. The heart of the defense appears to be the linebacking corps. Nate Irving had 80 tackles, to go along with 11 for loss and four interceptions. Middle linebacker Ray Michel had 85 tackles as well. Cornerback DeAndre Morgan is a difference-maker in the secondary after recording 10 passes defended last season.
