Clemson is coming off their first win of the season, when they took care of Citadel by the score of 45-17 last weekend. While they took care of an inferior opponent, it was nice to get a win after getting blown out by Alabama in the opener. Now they get a chance to redeem themselves by starting conference play, where they are the preseason favorites to win the ACC.
NC State also lost their opener in blow out fashion, 34-0, to South Carolina before taking care of William & Mary last week. They will have a tougher time of it this weekend as they haven’t beaten the Tigers in the last four meetings.
The NC State offense hasn’t really gotten things going here in the early goings, racking up just 138 yards against the Gamecocks and 325 totals yards last week. Even though they scored four touchdowns against William & Mary, the Wolfpack only managed 11 first downs and converted just 2-for-16 on third down. The bright spot was Harrison Beck, who came off the bench to throw two touchdowns and 246 yards on 17-of-25 passing. He was third on the depth chart coming into the season, but Daniel Evans was pulled early and Russell Wilson missed the game with a concussion.
The rushing game is led by Andre Brown, who had 17 rushes for 43 yards and a touchdown last week and 101 yards on 21 attempts in week 1.
Defensively NC State has been a little stronger, forcing four turnovers in each of the first two games and sacking the quarterback eight times overall. They gave up 369 total yards against South Carolina and then only 303 against William & Mary. Nate Irving has been the star so far, with 23 tackles, a fumble recovery, and two interceptions. Clemson did their best to put on a show last week after their weak opening performance against Alabama. The Tigers gained 525 total yards with 252 of which coming on the ground. After the Crimson Tide they had just 188 total yards without any coming on the ground. James Davis went for 107 yards on 13 carries, getting into the end zone once, while CJ Spiller added 75 yards but three score on just six attempts. That was more like it for the tandem that combined for 1,800 yards and 13 scores a year ago.
The passing offense is led by quarterback Cullen Harper, the preseason ACC Player of the Year, who bounced back with 14-of-18 passing for 192 yards and a touchdown last weekend in limited action.
Even though the Tigers gave up 427 total yards, we won’t put much stock in that since a big portion of those yards came when the game was well in hand and the starters were on the bench. After giving up 239 rushing yards to the Crimson Tide, Clemson held the Citadel to just 89. Michael Hamlin was huge with 10 tackles and three interceptions, after taking down 13 ball carriers in the opener. You can bet on the Clemson -18.5 spread at Bookmaker and get a 20% signup bonus.
