NCAA Football Odds – South Florida at Connecticut

Written December 4, 2009 by Hector Garza

The Bulls of South Florida (7-4) are hoping to wrap up another 8 win regular season as they finish Big East play with a game on the road.  They’re traveling to Rentschler Field to take on Connecticut (6-5), with the game set to kickoff at 8:00 pm et this Saturday night.  Our college football odds have the Huskies as the 7.5 point favorites, and the over is set at 50.5.  The Bulls own a 4-2 lead in the overall series, and last season proved to be close as they edged UConn 17-13.

USF started the season with five straight wins before cooling down.  They’ve lost four of their last six games, but three losses came against ranked opponents, and they’ve beaten two ranked foes as well.   They’ve been able to put up respectable offensive numbers, averaging 26.4 ppg on 363.1 yards.  QB BJ Daniels hasn’t been as consistent as hoped passing the ball, but leads the team in rushing with 710 yards and six td’s.   In the air he’s thrown for just over 1,600 yards and twelve scores, but has thrown nine interceptions in the process.  He’s joined in the backfield by RB Moise Plancher, who’s proved a legitimate threat with his five td’s and 539 yards.  The Bulls rely heavily on the run game that’s been averaging 167.3 ypg.  Betting college football is a mouse click away, where Bookmaker provides even more incentive with a 20% Deposit BONUS.

The defense has good statistics through eleven games, holding foes to 20.5 points on 326.6 yards.   The line has been solid forcing pressure and getting into the backfield, as evidenced by the 24 team sacks.   On the year they’ve done a decent job limiting running game, but last time out they were gashed for 240 rushing yards by Miami.  UConn also has a potent a ground game, so the success on the ground will be a major impact on this week’s winner.   The unit has done a good job forcing turnovers, tallying 21 thus far.

Connecticut has scored 40 td’s this year and relied on the running game to provide 27 of them.  On average the rushing attack provides 176.9 yards of offense per contest, and Jordan Todman and Andre Dixon pave the way.  Todman leads with 1079 yards and 14 td’s, while Dixon has added another 917 yards and 11 scores.  Last week against Syracuse the duo put up 204 yards and accounted for 4 rushing td’s, while QB Zach Frazier threw for 273 yards and two more.   Frazier has had times of bad decision making, as he’s passed for seven td’s to nine int’s.  Overall the offense has enjoyed success putting up an 32.4 ppg on over 400 ypg.

The defense has allowed 24.8 ppg, making it tough to win against stronger opponents.  The major weakness has been against the pass, where the stop unit is allowing over 250 ypg.  In the win last week against Syracuse, they allowed three scores and 360 yards passing.  It’s good for them that USF isn’t known for their aerial attack, and UConn should do better against the run, where they’re only giving up 132.5 ypg.

Turnover may be the deciding factor in this Big East game between two teams evenly matched.  The oddsmakers are favoring the Huskies with the stronger offense, and because they’re playing at home.  USF has the better defense, and if they can limit the running game they’ve got a good chance to pull out the upset.  I like the Bulls +7.   You can check out more free college football picks at Betfirms.
