Possible Round One NCAA Tournament Upsets

Written March 18, 2009 by Jack Jones

First Round Tournament UpsetsThe guys over at Sportsbook.com have listed some opening round games in which they think you could possibly see some upsets.  Each of these teams have the ability to win the game outright, so if you like taking money lines there could be some value in these selections.  If you are looking to finish your college basketball betting season off on a winning note, check out Sportsbook.com where you can deposit with your credit or debit card and get reduced juice wagering on Fridays.

Western Kentucky over Illinois – With the Hilltoppers getting 4.5 points against the Illini you might want to think about jumping on board.  This team played bracket buster last year when they took down Drake as a 12-seed in the first round, and will have to chance to do so again against Illinois.  AJ Slaughter and Orlando Mendez-Valdez are both back in the backcourt and with Illini being so inept on offense, don’t be too surprised if WKU pulls off an upset.

Morgan State over Oklahoma – Here you would probably want to take the 16.5 points rather than the money line, but if you like a lot of risk for a lot of reward you can get a large payout on Morgan State.  Only four two seeds have lost in the last 96 games, but when they do it’s when the team averages less than 80 ppg and gives up more than 65.  Oklahoma puts up 79.2 ppg while allowing 67.8, fitting that system.

North Dakota State over Kansas – This is the first round upset the Sportsbook.com crew is calling that I actually agree with.  The Bison are putting up 80.8 ppg and fourteen seeds that average more than 76.5 ppg have beaten three seeds around 30% of the time.  The Jayhawks have no starters back from last year’s championship squad, yet NDSU has four fifth-year seniors and will be playing closer to home with the game in Minneapolis which may make taking the +10 for the Bison a valuable bet.
