Connecticut Huskies National Championship Odds
Written March 25, 2009 by Jason Lowry
The NCAA Tournament is in full swing, as the first two rounds are in the book and the final 16 teams remain. This year it has been all about the top seeds, as this year marks the first time that the 1-3 seeds in each bracket have made it to the Sweet 16. The other story has been the dominant performance by the Big East that has sent 5 teams to the Sweet 16, including one from each bracket. One of the Big East teams is the Connecticut Huskies, who are the No.1 seed out of the West. While there is still a long way to go, here is a look at how the Huskies got to the Sweet 16 and their chances of winning the whole thing.
The Huskies have cruised in the first two rounds, as they easily took care of No.16 Chattanooga 103-47, and then went on to handle No.9 Texas A&M with no problem in the second round 92-66. The Huskies have got scoring from a number of players in the first two rounds, as 4 different players have scored at least 20 points in one of the two games, but the only player to do it in both games is senior guard A.J. Price, who dropped 20 in the first round, and then really stepped it up in the second round scoring 27 points with 8 assists and 5 rebounds. The Huskies also got a big time performance from Jeff Adrian in the win over Texas A&M, as the forward connected on 11 of 16 shooting for 23 points to go along with his 8 rebounds. This week the Huskies must first get by the Purdue Boilermakers, who come in off wins over Northern Iowa and Washington. Bet UConn Huskies -6.5 over Purdue at Sportsbook.com.
The Huskies definitely have what it takes to win the whole thing this year, as they got talent all over the floor. They will continue to need big performances from Price and Adrian in the upcoming rounds as the competition continues to get harder. The team will also need a strong and healthy Hasheem Thabeet. Thabeet was outstanding in the opening round scoring 20 points with 13 rebounds, but was only good for 6 points and 4 rebounds in the 2nd round matchup with Texas A&M. Thabeet comes into the final rounds of the tournament very well rested as he has played just 20 minutes in each of the first two games. If the Huskies are able to get by Purdue this Thursday, they will have a tough matchup in the Elite 8 against the winner of the Missouri vs. Memphis game. If you look at how every team has played so far this tournament there is no team that has played better than the Huskies, so if you are looking to lock your pick on the winner, the Huskies are a great bet to win it all.
