Nebraska at Washington

This Saturday the No.8 Nebraska Cornhuskers will get their first real test of the season, as they must go on the road to take on Jake Locker and the Washington Huskies, in what I believe is one of the more interesting matchups of week 3. The Cornhuskers cruised to 2-0 on the season with a 38-17 win over Idaha, while the Huskies evened up their record at 1-1 with a nice 41-20 win at home against Syracuse. Taking a look at the odds for this game, the oddsmakers currently have Nebraska favored by 3.5-points over Washington.

While the Nebraska offense racked up 471 yards of total offense in their win over Idaho, it was the defense that really shined, as the Cornhuskers forced six turnovers and came away with seven sacks. Five different Cornhuskers came away with an interception, including two that went for touchdowns by Ricky Thenarse and Dejon Gomes.

While the defense played lights out, the offense has plenty of room for improvement, as they turned the ball over four times or this game could have been much worse than what it was. Starting quarterback Taylor Martinez  finished the game with just 106 yards passing with no touchdowns and an interception. Martinez however was very effective running the ball, as he carried it 14 times for 157 yards and two scores. Running back Roy Helu Jr. also had a strong day on the ground, as he finished up with 107 yards and a score on just nine attempts.

The Huskies got a big game out of quarterback Jake Locker and wide out Jermaine Kearse, as the two connected on three touchdown tosses. Locker finished the game with 289 yards and four touchdowns on 22 of 33 passing, while Kearse had a monster game with nine catches for 179 yards. Locker also connected with Devin Aguilar on seven passes for 81 yards and a score.

Running back Chris Polk had a solid day on the ground, as he finished with 117 yards on 20 carries, including a nice 52-yard run that went for a touchdown. Overall it was a much better performance from the offense, as they really struggled to get much of anything going in the season opener at BYU.

Looking at the Odds: I think you have to take Washington and the 3.5-points at home in this one. I know Nebraska has looked really good in their first couple games, but those were against some pretty bad teams. I still think they have a great shot at winning the game, but I believe we will seem them struggle to get things going in their first road game of the season. I look for Locker and the Washington offense to be able to move the ball against the Cornhuskers defense, which has thrived off creating turnovers. It is also worth noting that the Cornhuskers have turned the ball over six times in their first two games. My final score prediction is Nebraska 24, Washington 21.
