This week across the globe on the other side of the world, there is a big-money golf tournament to provide bettors with an opportunity to wager on. The Nedbank Golf Challenge brings a limited field with some of the best international players in the world to Sun City, South Africa. The event takes place at the Gary Player Country Club and while there is quite a bit of prize money at stake, this is not an official event on any of the major tours.
The Nedbank Golf Challenge will take place from Thursday to Sunday and offers $5 million in prize money, with $1.25 million going to the winner of the event. This is an exclusive field, compiled by taking the four major tournament winners, the defending champion, the top player on the South Africa Order of Merit, and the highest available players in the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR).
The only winner of a major title that is in the field this year is British Open champion Louis Oosthuizen (who is +1500 in golf betting), but the #1-ranked player in the world, Lee Westwood (the favorite at +350), is also there, as is the defending champ, Robert Allenby, who carries a price of +950.

What is now known as the Nedbank Golf Challenge was first held in 1981, during apartheid, when the region was the republic of Bophutatswana. The first winner of the event was former US Open champion Johnny Miller. Back then the tournament was called the “Million Dollar Challenge,” due to the million-dollar purse which gave half of that prize money to the winner. Later on, the tournament was a winner-take-all affair.
Some of the top players in the world have won this tournament. Raymond Floyd was the champion in 1982. Golf bettors were treated to back-to-back wins by Sever Ballesteros in 1983 and 1984. Bernhard Langer is a two-time champion. Nick Price has won it three times. Nick Faldo won in 1994. Jim Furyk won in consecutive years (2005 and ’06), although unfortunately he chose not to play in it this year.
In the 29 years this tournament has existed, nine titles can be chalked up to South Africa. David Frost and Fulton Allem are past winners; in fact, Frost has won three times. Trevor Immelman, a former Master champion, was the winner in 2007. This year makes the return of two South Africans who have taken home winner’s honors in this event. Ernie Els, who won in 1999, 2000 and 2002, is priced at +400 in the golf betting odds, and that makes him the second favorite behind Westwood. Retief Goosen, the 2004 champ, is at +650.
All twelve of these players are a genuine threat to win, and that, really, is the great thing golf bettors have to look forward to when wagering on the Nedbank Golf Challenge.
