Nevada vs Notre Dame College Football Lines
Written September 4, 2009 by InfoPlays
Anything short of a BCS Bowl for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish this season would be considered unacceptable. They have a very manageable schedule, which starts with the Nevada Wolf Pack on Saturday, September 5th at home. Charlie Weis led the Fighting Irish to BCS Bowls in 2005 and ‘06, but then suffered a school-record nine losses in 2007 and six losses in ‘08. The 15 losses in the last two seasons are the most in the history of Notre Dame, and Weis is firmly planted on the hot seat because of it. NCAA football lines show Notre Dame -14.5 over Nevada with a Total Set of 62 points in the opener.
Notre Dame is ranked No. 23 in the country to start the season, their first Top-25 showing since the end of the 2006 season. The Fighting Irish will have to face USC this year, but they’ll get the Trojans at home, representing the only ranked team on the schedule. That doesn’t mean this team isn’t prone to the upset, as Notre Dame has suffered home set backs to Syracuse and Air Force in recent memory. QB Jimmy Clausen is emerging as the leader of this team, and thus he was selected as a team captain by the players. Clausen improved dramatically last season after a tough freshman campaign, throwing for 3,172 yards and 25 touchdowns with 17 interceptions. Notre Dame welcomes back the majority of their skill players, which includes leading rusher Armando Allen and the top two receivers in Golden Tate and Malcolm Floyd. The defense is expected to be much improved in the depth department, and they’ll get help from one of the top high school recruits in the nation in freshman linebacker Manti Te’o.

Nevada also welcomes back several talented skill players from last year’s squad, so this will be no walk in the park for the Fighting Irish. QB Colin Kaepernick earned WAC Offensive Player of the Year honors last season after passing for more than 2,500 yards and rushing for more than 1,000, the first player in NCAA history to accomplish such a feat. He accounted for 39 touchdowns through the air and on the ground. The Wolf Pack ranked tops in the nation last season in rushing yards. Back are tailbacks Vai Taua and Luke Lippincott. Taua ran for 1,567 yards in 2008 to lead the team. Lippincott was sidelined with a torn ACL last season, but he’s a proven playmaker, rushing for 1,420 yards in 2007. So this Notre Dame front seven will be tested right away. But the Irish should be able to throw all over the Nevada defense. The Wolf Pack finished last in the nation against the pass in 2008, giving up 321.1 yards/game through the air. The offensive tackles will be tested, though, as defensive ends Dontay Moch and Kevin Basped combined for 21.5 sacks a year ago.
