Nevada at UNLV

This Saturday the No.25 ranked Nevada Wolf Pack will look to remain unbeaten when they head to Las Vegas to take on the UNLV Rebels. The Wolf Pack improved t0 4-0 on the season with an impressive 27-13 win over BYU last week, while the Rebels grabbed their first win of the season in a blowout win over New Mexico 45-10. Nevada has owned UNLV in this rivalry the past two years, winning 49-27 in 2008 and 63-28 last year. If you are looking to bet on the game this weekend, the current odds have the Wolf Pack favored by 20.5-points over the Rebels on the road.
Nevada (4-0, 0-0 WAC): The Wolf Pack have cruised in their first four games of the season, as they have won each game by at least 14 points. Nevada has been good both with the run and the pass, as they come in ranked sixth in the country with 286 yards on the ground, and are 41st with 242 passing yards a game. Last week against BYU the Wolf Pack jumped out to an early 24-10 lead and never looked back the rest of the way, as the defense took care of business in the second half allowing BYU to score just three points.
A big reason the Wolf Pack have got off to a great start this season is the play of quarterback Colin Kaepernick. Last week Kaepernick threw for 196 yards and a touchdown, and added another 82 yards and a score on the ground. So far this season Kaepernick has thrown for 7 touchdowns and has another 8 touchdowns on the ground. Running back Vai Taua has also put together a good start, as he has rushed for 453 yards and five touchdowns, including 133 yards and a score last week against BYU. If the offense continues to play at this level, the Wolf Pack are going to be a tough out for any team this year, including Boise State later in the season.
UNLV (1-3, 1-1 MWC): The Rebels got off to a miserable start, as they were completely dominated in their first three games of the season by Wisconsin, Utah, and Idaho, but they finally got on the board with a nice win last week against New Mexico. Nothing to really get excited about, as New Mexico just might be the worst team in football. The Rebels average just under 285 yards a game on the season, and the defense is allowing nearly 30 points a game.
Last week the Rebels completed just 1 of 11 attempts on third down, but still managed to win the game by 35 points. Omar Clayton had his best game of the season, throwing for 194 yards and three touchdowns, all three of which went to wide out Michael Johnson, who finished with eight catches for 138 yards. Running back Channing Trotter had 63 yards and a score on the ground, and backup Tim Cornett added 50 yards and a touchdown on just two carries. The Rebels are going to have to play their best game of the season if they want any chance of pulling off the upset this Saturday.
Looking at the Odds: Even though the Wolf Pack are heavy favorites in this one, I think you have to take them to cover the 20.5-point spread. Nevada has owned the Rebels of late, and this is by far the best team they have had in years. It also helps that the Wolf Pack need to win big to continue to get respect around the nation. My final score prediction is Nevada 42, UNLV 17.
Got something to say?
