Patriots at Bills NFL Spread
Written December 17, 2009 by Rock Henderson
The New England Patriots will attempt to hold on to their one game lead in the AFC East when they clash with the 5-8 Buffalo Bills. The Dolphins and Jets are just one game behind New England heading into the final three games. Buffalo is playing for pride the rest of the way, but have made nice strides in the second half of their season. The Pats defeated the Bills by a single point in Week 1 as the two teams battled back and forth. New England is favored by 7 points according to our most recent NFL lines.
Former head coach Dick Jauron got the axe after a slow start made it evident that the Bills were not reaching the playoffs once again this season. Interim coach Perry Fewell took over on November 17th and has led Buffalo to a 2-2 record. The quarterback situation is still a bit of a question mark as Trent Edwards and Ryan Fitzpatrick have played musical chairs at the position. Both have similar stats as Edwards has thrown for 1170 yards and six touchdowns with seven interceptions. Fitzpatrick has 1089 passing yards and five touchdowns with nine interceptions. It is obvious that the Bills need to find a long term solution behind center. The running game is led by Fred Jackson and Marshawn Lynch. Jackson leads the team in rushing with 731 yards and two touchdowns. His role has increased in recent weeks after giving way to towards the middle of the season after he returned from a three game suspension. Disgruntled WR Terrell Owens is starting to put up T.O like numbers despite a slow start to his Bills career. The future Hall of Famer has caught 45 balls for 705 yards and four touchdowns. Defensively, Buffalo is very strong against the pass as they rank fifth in the league. They are atrocious versus the run, however, as they are dead last and allow over 170 yards per game. It hasn’t been a typical year for the New England Patriot organization as the coaching staff has made questionable decisions and Randy Moss was accused of quitting against Carolina last week even though the Patriots won the game. Tom Brady has been his usual self, throwing for over 3800 yards and 23 touchdowns with only 11 picks. He has rebounded nicely after missing the entire 2008 season due to a leg injury. RB Laurence Maroney has taken back his starting role as the team’s number one back with a physical running style in between the tackles. The former Minnesota Gopher has rushed for 654 yards and eight scores through 13 games. Kevin Faulk is still a vital part of the offense as he relishes in his third down running back role. Only Moss and Wes Welker have more catches than the 36 balls Faulk has caught. Speaking of Welker, the best slot receiver in the game is having a Pro Bowl caliber year with 105 catches for 1185 yards and four scores. With three games remaining, Welker could easily catch over 125 passes which would be an amazing feat. The Pats still have issues on the defensive side of the ball even though they rank 7th in points allowed per game. Their secondary has been torched by Peyton Manning and Drew Brees. They have played well against lesser competition, but struggled mightily against playoff bound teams.
Buffalo actually had New England beat in the opener as Tom Brady looked average and their running game was effective before they ultimately gave the game away. Upstate New York is a tough place to play this late in the year as the weather plays a major factor. The Patriots are still in a hotly contested race in the division and know this is a must win. We will lay the 7 in this spot for a desperate playoff bound team against an inferior opponent. Play: New England -7
