2009 New Orleans Bowl: Middle Tennessee State vs. Southern Miss Spread

Written December 18, 2009 by Kyle Hunter

This year’s R&L Carriers New Orleans Bowl is a match up of Middle Tennessee State from the Sun Belt against Southern Mississippi from Conference USA. MTSU comes into this game with a 9-3 record and Southern Mississippi comes in with a record of 7-5. This bowl game will be the only one on the slate this coming Sunday, so it should receive plenty of attention from college football fans. The Blue Raiders of Middle Tennessee State has a nice season this year and finished with 6 straight wins after starting the season at just 3-3. Dwight Dasher is the signal caller for the Blue Raiders and Dasher gives them a nice dual threat quarterback that likes to run first, but has a nice strong arm as well. Even after taking away the lost yards on sacks Dasher is averaging 4.8 yards per carry and has 11 rushing touchdowns. Dasher has thrown for 21 touchdowns and 14 interceptions and has a completion rate of just 54.5%. D.D. Kyles is a tailback who has come on in a big way for MTSU as the season has gone along. Kyles is averaging 6.4 yards per carry on the season. There is no single standout at wide receiver, but there are 9 players on the team with at least 11 receptions this year, so they have plenty of options. The defense of the Blue Raiders is pretty good, and they have been much improved as the season goes along.

The Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles are pretty familiar to heading to New Orleans for a bowl game, but they definitely have to appreciate the offer each time. Austin Davis was the original starting quarterback, but he was hurt for the year and Martevious Young has stepped in and done a terrific job. Young has thrown 13 touchdowns and just one interception on the year. Young has the ability to scramble and is great at keeping plays alive for a long period of time. Damion Fletcher is a solid running back, averaging 4.6 yards per carry on over 200 carries this season. Six players on the offense have at least 23 receptions so Young has plenty of targets to throw the football to. Tracey Lampley is an explosive punt and kick returner who is sometimes the X factor for the Golden Eagles. The defense has given up 24.5 points per game. They are very suspect against a solid passing attack, and they have allowed 334 yards passing per game in their last 3 contests.

The college football odds page shows Southern Mississippi a 3.5 point favorite. The posted total is set at 57.5. If you are making football picks on this one you should know that MTSU is 6-0 against the spread in their last 6 games, but Southern Mississippi is also 4-1 against the spread in their last 5 bowl games.

The Golden Eagles will likely have a little bit of a home field advantage in this one, which is probably one of the main reasons they are favored. Both teams have shown glimpses of greatness this year, but they were also inconsistent against the best teams in their respective leagues. I expect the winner to need to score quite a few points and I expect an entertaining game in this one.
