2011 New Orleans Saints Schedule
Written by Steve Janus - Google +
The New Orleans Saints were unable to defend their Super Bowl title from the 2009-10 season. While the Saints gave way to the Atlanta Falcons in the NFC South, they still managed to finish second in the division at 11-5 and earn one of the two Wild Card spots in the playoffs. New Orleans went into the playoffs with a first round matchup against the Seattle Seahawks, who became the first team to win a division and make the playoffs with a losing record (7-9). Despite being heavily favored on the road, Seattle stunned everyone with a 41-36 win. The hope for Saints fans is that the loss will light another fire under this team to get back to the form that made them the best in the NFL just two seasons ago.
It’s no secret that the NFC South is starting to mold into one of the top division in the NFL, which means you not only have to be great in your six division games, but in order to win this division you have to play extremely well against the other teams in the league. To get a better idea of where the Saints are headed in the 2011-12 NFL season, lets take a closer look at their schedule. Outside of their division games, New Orleans will take on the NFC North, AFC South, New York Giants, and St Louis Rams.
The Saints went a solid 4-2 against the their division rivals in 2010. They swept both games against the Carolina Panthers, while splitting their two games against the Atlanta Falcons and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. New Orleans appears to once again have a clear advantage over Carolina, and I fully expect them to win both games again this season. The Saints have the talent to win their other four division games against the Buccaneers and Falcons, but I think they will be happy with a 2-2 split.
Looking at the four games against the NFC North, New Orleans will host the Chicago Bears and Detroit Lions, while going on the road to take on the Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings. I expect the Saints to be favored in both home games, but I wouldn’t be surprised if either Chicago or Detroit pulled off an upset. The game to watch against this division is the Thursday night week 1 showdown at Green Bay. With the way these two teams score, it will likely come down to which offense has the ball last.
The Saints have to like their chances in their four games against the AFC South. They get the Indianapolis Colts and Houston Texans at home, while going on the road to take on the Jacksonville Jaguars and Tennessee Titans. While the home games against the Colts and Texans won’t be easy, I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see New Orleans favored in all four games.
That leaves the Saints two conference games against the Giants and Rams. New Orleans will go on the road to take on an emerging St Louis team, while getting a tough Giants team at home. While I again expect the Saints to be favored in both of these games, these are two games that could easily go the other way. As long as this team can avoid major injuries they should be one of the best the NFC has to offer.
