2009 New York Giants Mock Draft
Written April 10, 2009 by Black Widow
Heading into the offseason, the Giants had a big decision to make as to whether or not to bring back Brandon Jacobs or Derrick Ward, or both. New York made a wise move by signing Jacobs to a 4-year deal and letting Ward part ways and leave for Tampa Bay. This team has been fairly frugal in free agency, although cutting WR Plaxico Burress has allowed them to reallocate that money to another receiver if they decide to go that route. Mostly, the Giants want to build depth, and having a deep roster has allowed the team to have back-to-back winning seasons and playoff berths. 3rd String Safety likes the Giants to go after a wide receiver with their first pick, and I tend to agree, but here are some of the other gaps New York needs to fill in the 2009 NFL Draft:
1.) Wide Receiver - Plaxico Burress has been cut, and Amani Toomer is on the free agent market. The Giants may have two key wide receivers to replace heading into the Draft. Although there is depth with Domenik Hixon, Steve Smith and Mario Manningham, the team lacks a game-breaker and could look to stock this spot through free agency of in the Draft. Good Fits in ‘09 Draft Class: WR Kenny Britt (Rutgers), WR Ramses Barden (Cal Poly).
2.) Offensive Tackle - The Giants’ offensive line has been a rock that past two seasons, and these individuals work well together as a unit. That said, Kareem McKenzie enters the back side of his career and turns 30 in May, and he has back problems to boot. Most feel David Diehl is a solid left tackle, but he might be better at another position in a year or two. The Giants would love to groom a young tackle for the future and could afford to take one in Round One if they wanted. Good Fits in ‘09 Draft Class: OT Xavier Fulton (Illinois).
3.) Defensive Tackle - One of the biggest reasons for the Giants’ defensive success has been the play of its line, and there are three good tackles in Fred Robbins, Barry Cofield and Jay Alford, but more depth is needed. Robbins was outstanding in 2008, but he turns 32 this year and is entering his 10th season. The Giants covet strong, quick tackles who can play multiple techniques and run twists and stuns and even drop into cover on occasion. Good Fits in ‘09 Draft Class: DL Robert Ayers (Tennessee), DT Ricky Jean-Francois (LSU).
4.) Outside Linebacker - OLB is not a high-impact position in the Giants’ defensive scheme, but still they need more production from these spots. SLB Danny Clark was serviceable, and WLB Chase Blackburn was smart and instinctive, but the Giants would love to bring on another young playmaker. They want someone to compete with 2008 draft pick WLB in Bryan Kehl and ‘06 choice Gerris Wilkinson. The Giants lacked a pass-rushing option on blitzes from the outside last season with the loss of Kawika Mitchell to free agency. Good Fits in ‘09 Draft Class: LB Anthony Fielder (California).
5.) Cornerback - There are two outstanding young corners to build around in Corey Webster and Aaron Ross, but the Giants could use more help here. Sam Madison and R.W. McQuarters likely won’t be back, and even with Terrell Thomas showing promise as a nickel back, the Giants could use reinforcements on the outside of their secondary. Typically, the team looks for corners who can hold up in man coverage and who are strong against the run. Good Fits in ‘09 Draft Class: CB Vontae Davis (Illinois), CB DeAngelo Smith (Cincinnati).

Got something to say?

The giants just went out and grabbed a phenomenal athlete in Canty and big boy rocky bernard to help out that D Line. With that said, it would be wasteful to draft someone to play on the line. Secondly, we clearly need to fill the WR spot with a pick in the draft and unless Jerry has plans to make a trade for edwards, ocho cinco, holt, or boldin. It would be interesting to see who they draft this year at the linebacker position because Antonio Pierce is aging and youth in that position can be achieved through the draft. Ultimately, Jerry Reese is the head honcho during NFL Draft season, and I think that with as many picks as we have, we should expect big things this year from the organization.

Sounds like you know Giants’ football pretty well. They certainly need to focus on the WR position more than anything, but they’ve been known for adding D-Linemen each year and building from the inside out. So it’s safe to say they will be looking for youth on the D-Line in the Draft at some point because New York feels they can never have enough depth at those all-important positions.

It looks as if we think exactly alike. I put in my two sense in an article on the site Bleacher Report.com . Are opinions mirror each other.
