2011 New York Giants Schedule
Written by Jack Jones
The New York Giants are coming off a 10-6 season which wasn’t quite good enough for them to make the playoffs. This team looked like a shoe-in to make the postseason when they were leading the Philadelphia Eagles 31-10 in the fourth quarter in Week 15. The Eagles went on to score 28 unanswered points, including a last-second punt return touchdown from DeSean Jackson to seal the deal. The Giants could never recover.
New York ended up tied for the NFC East lead with Philadelphia at season’s end, but did not win the division due to a pair of head-to-head losses to the Eagles. The Giants have the personnel to make another Super Bowl run, and now they just have to put it all together for an entire season. New York has multi-dimensional offensively and they can get after the quarterback defensively.
I’m going to go over their 2011-12 schedule to see how many wins and losses they are likely to end up with at season’s end. The Giants will face the NFC West and AFC East divisions along with games against the Green Bay Packers and New Orleans Saints due to their second-place finish in the NFC East. They will host the Packers in a game they will likely be favored, but they are for sure to be an underdog at New Orleans.
The Giants went 3-3 in the NFC East last year and will obviously play the six division games they do every year once again in 2011. The Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles will be their main contenders, while the Washington Redskins are likely to be down again. New York really needs at least a 4-2 record within their division to win it this year.
New York certainly lucks out getting to face the NFC West because as we’ve seen over the last few years, this is the worst division in football. The Giants face the St. Louis Rams and Seattle Seahawks at home and will be heavy favorites in both of those contests. They do have to travel for road games against the San Francisco 49ers and Arizona Cardinals, but still should be favored in this contests as well. Ideally they’d like to get through with a 4-0 record, but they have to go at least 3-1 against this terrible division.
Squaring off against the AFC East will make life difficult. The New England Patriots and New York Jets are two of the top teams in the league heading into the 2011 season. They will have to play both of those contests on the road which makes their schedule even more tough. New York will certainly be an underdog in each game and if they can steal a win against either the Patriots or Jets it would be quite an accomplishment. The Giants should have no problem taking care of the Miami Dolphins and Buffalo Bills at home. I predict New York to finish with the same 10-6 record they did a year ago after going through their schedule.
