New York Jets 2008 NFL Mock Draft
Written March 28, 2008 by Jack Jones
The New York Jets are coming off a pretty disappointing 2008 season, where they went 4-12. While the team struggled to win games, they might not be that far from a break out year as 9 of their losses came by 10-points or less. A good off-season and some quality draft picks could be all this team needs. While the draft is still about a month away, the Jets have been pretty busy so far in free agency. The biggest signing came in G Alan Faneca, but they also landed the likes of T Damien Woody, DT Kris Jenkins, LB Calvin Pace, and TE Bubba Franks. The Jets did lose LB Jonathan Vilma, but hey are counting on last year’s 2nd round pick, David Harris to be able to handle the load. Harris wasn’t the only big splash in the 2007 draft, as they landed CB Darrelle Revis, who looks like he will be playing on Sundays for many years to come. So lets take a look at what the Jets biggest needs are heading into the draft. 1. Linebacker
Though the Jets look pretty solid at the linebacker position they really need an outside linebacker that can come in and get some pressure on the quarterback. Bryan Thomas didn’t get it done in 2007 and he could see his job slipping if the team drafts one of the top guys early in the draft. The Jets could land a big time player with the 6th overall pick in Ohio States Vernon Gholston. Gholston could come in and make an immediate impact and give the Jets just what they need on defense.
2. Wide Receiver
While Jerricho Cotchery really came around last season and will likely come in as the Jets number target, but they still could use some help at this position. While Laveranues Coles is a solid option, he doesn’t have the deep threat that the team could really use. The Jets won’t likely look here early, but there should still be some good options later in the draft. The Jets could go after Houston’s Donnie Avery, Appalachian State’s Dexter Jackson, or LSU’s Early Doucet.
3. Cornerback
The team is set on the left side with Revis, but he could use some solid help on the other side to shutdown the passing game. Right now they have David Barrett, who is coming in with just one interception in 2007. While the Jets will likely miss out on all the big name corners unless they make a bold move and go with a corner in the first round. There will still be some decent corners in round 2, and could land Wisconsin’s Jake Ikegquonu or maybe Virginia Tech’s Brandon Flowers if he slips out of the first round.
4. Running back
As of now Thomas Jones is set to be the starting running back in 2007, and his numbers should improve, as the line has been upgraded greatly. One other factor that should help the running game is the signing of FB Tony Richardson, who has been one of the games best for years at that position. So what it will come down to is if Arkansas’s Darren McFadden is on the board when the Jets are up in round 1, if so they have no choice but to grab him. McFadden is an unbelievable talent and could carry this team to the playoffs in his first year.
5. Quarterback
The team is set on Kellen Clemons as the starter when the season rolls around, but with Chad Pennington getting older and weaker, the team could really use a solid backup at this position. They might be able to land a guy such as Hawaii’s Colt Brennan late or maybe USC’s John David Booty.
