New York Jets at Oakland Raiders NFL Lines

Written October 25, 2009 by Black Widow

The 3-3 New York Jets head to the west coast to do battle with the 2-4 Oakland Raiders for Week 7 NFL this Sunday. The Jets have lost 3 straight games, including their 16-13 overtime loss to Buffalo last week. The Raiders are coming off a huge upset win, 13-9, over the Philadelphia Eagles last Sunday. They were a two-touchdown underdog while the Jets were a double-digit favorite, showing the parity in this league. We have taken a look at the NFL betting lines for Week 7, and they have listed the Jets -6 over the Raiders with a Total Set of 35 points. This shows that odds makers are predicting that New York will bounce back on the road.

New York was one of the biggest stories in the NFL after their 3-0 start under new head coach Rex Ryan, and now they remain a big story but it’s all negative criticism throughout the media after losing 3 straight games to the Saints, Dolphins and Bills. QB Mark Sanchez was supposed to be the next Joe Namath, but after his last three games it’s clear that he is far from it. Sanchez went 10-for-29 against the Bills with 5 interceptions, clearly the reason they lost the game. He has thrown just one touchdown to eight interceptions during this 3-game losing streak. To make matters worse, the Jets lost perhaps their best defensive player in NT Chris Jenkins for the remainder of the season after he suffered a torn ACL in their loss to Buffalo. The Jets are the sixth-ranked defense in the league, but they are much weaker up the middle without his presence on the field. Starting wide receiver, Jerricho Cotchery, will miss is second straight game due to a nagging hamstring injury. Also out is starting CB Lito Sheppard. If the same Oakland from last Sunday shows up, the Jets will have their hands full and these injuries are not helping matters.

Sanchez ranks 34th out of 36 quarterbacks with a 56.7 QB Rating. He is ahead of JaMarcus Russell, who is sitting at 35th with a 51.0 rating. Russell is the biggest culprit as to why the Raiders rank dead last in the NFL with 229.7 yards/game of total offense this season. He has thrown just 2 touchdowns to 6 interceptions while completing a putrid 45.6 percent of his pass attempts. Despite the Raiders beating the Eagles 13-9 at home on Sunday, Russell threw two costly interceptions and Oakland failed to reach 14 points for a fifth consecutive game. Russell has only 7 career wins under his belt, but one came against the Jets at home last year in a 16-13 overtime win. The Raiders will need another strong defensive performance Sunday to win, as they held the Eagles to just 2-for-16 on third downs last week which was the key to their victory. DE Richard Seymour has made a bold guarantee stating the Raiders would make the playoffs this season, which might be the most outlandish guarantee from any player yet this season. But maybe he sees something in this team that most on the outside do not. They’ll get another chance to show it against the Jets Sunday.
