2009 NFL Mock Draft: New York Jets

Written April 15, 2009 by Black Widow

jets-mock-draft-041520009The Jets sold out in free agency last season, throwing caution and cash to the wind. Kris Jenkins, Calvin Pace, Alan Faneca, Damien Woody and Brett Favre were the big names, but unfortunately these names didn’t amount to much for Gang Green on the field. A 9-7 record and a second straight season without a playoff berth later, Eric Mangini was handed his walking papers. Now it’s up to Rex Ryan to prove Big Apple is ripe for a second football power.  Jet’s Insider likes New York to take a stab at Georgia Runningback, Knowshon Moreno in the first round of the draft, but here are the positions I think the Jets need to fill before RB:

1.) Cornerback- For much of the past two years, the Jets have shuffled in bodies into the CB spot opposite emerging star Darrelle Revis. They’ve largely been unsuccessful in doing so. They thought they found the solution in fifth-round pick Dwight Lowery, but the 2008 rookie turned out to be a tease and no revelation. Adding another lockdown corner would give the Jets for flexibility to go man-defense and let S Kerry Rhodes be in a more freelancing position. Adding Lito Sheppard from the Eagles should help. Good Fits in ’09 Draft Class: CB Jairus Byrd (Oregon), CB Cary Harris (USC).

2.) Defensive End - Good 3-4 defensive ends are hard to come by in the draft, partially due to the scarcity of college programs that run the system, but mostly because of the unique physical qualities demanded of them. They need to be quick enough to get penetration and strong enough to be two-gaping lane cloggers. Shaun Ellis enjoyed a resurgence in ‘08, but he can’t be counted on for too many more years, and Kenyon Coleman is nothing more than a Plan B. Good Fits in ‘09 Draft Class: DE Tyson Jackson (LSU).

3.) Quarterback – Favre’s deteriorating play was more responsible for the Jets’ failure to make the postseason than Mangini’s coaching mistakes. With Favre now gone to retirement, the Jets will be looking for a quarterback in the draft if they don’t find one in free agency. Kellen Clemens is the only quarterback to have taken an NFL snap left on the roster, and he has yet to prove worthy of the starting gig. Erik Ainge was awful in practice as a rookie, and nobody’s clamoring about unheralded Brett Ratliff as the next out-of-nowhere sensation after he showed promise on the scout team. Good Fits in ‘09 Draft Class: QB Josh Freeman (K-State).

4.) Wide Receiver – Jerricho Cotchery is a dubious No. 1 target, and that’s precisely the role he’s staring down in 2010 unless the Jets add another weapon to their WR arsenal. Laveranues Coles butted heads with teams management the past two seasons, which prompted him to be released through free agency to the Cincinnati Bengals. On the bright side, there’s a wealth of young talent that would minimize the WR need if they become more consistent. Brad Smith, Chansi Stuckey and David Clowney have all had their moments. Good Fits in ‘09 Draft Class: WR Brandon Tate (UNC), WR Demetrius Byrd (LSU).

5.) Offensive Tackle - ‘06 No. 4 overall pick D’Brickishaw Ferguson has not lived up to his hype. Ferguson is chronically underweight and his metabolism has kept him from being a road grader on the outside. He’s a capable performer but is nowhere near the player the Jets thought he would be coming out of Virginia. The more pressing concern is on the right side, where Woody was ill-prepared to handle the AFC’s multitude of speed rushers and got mixed up too often on blitz-pickup assignments. Good Fits in ‘09 Draft Class: OT Gerald Cadogan (Penn State), OT Phil Loadholt (Oklahoma).
