2011 New York Jets Schedule

Written by

The New York Jets finished second in the AFC East at 11-5, but once again earned a spot in the postseason with one of the two wild card spots. New York made it back to the AFC Championship game for a second straight season, after beating the Indianapolis Colts and New England Patriots on the road in the first two rounds, but failed to win the big game to get to the Super Bowl yet again, falling to the Pittsburgh SteelersĀ  24-19. Despite the disappointing finish, Jets head coach, Rex Ryan, believes this team is going to break through with a Super Bowl appearance this year.

While the Jets have shown that they can have a lot of success in the playoffs without winning their division, I believe that is the next step this team needs to take. Getting home field and possibly even a bye in the playoffs could be just what this team needs to get over the hump, as it is a very difficult to win three games on the road against the best in your conference.

To get a better feel for how the Jets could finish the 2011-12 season, let’s take a look at their schedule for the upcoming season. The Jets are set to take on the AFC West, NFC East, Baltimore Ravens, Jacksonville Jaguars, plus their six division games against the AFC East.

While the Patriots won the East by 3 games last year, New York was one of just two teams to beat the Patriots. New York split their season series against the Patriots with each team winning at home, and then later knocked New England out of the playoffs. New York went 3-1 against the rest of the division, beating the Bills twice and splitting their two games against the Dolphins.

The Jets, like the Patriots, appear to have the advantage against the AFC West. They get arguably the two best teams in Kansas City and San Diego at home, while having to go on the road to take on Oakland and Denver. New York is talented enough to win each of these games, but only Denver figures to be a lock. If New York struggles against the West they could have a hard time even making the playoffs.

In New York’s four games against the NFC East they have to go on the road to take on the Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Redskins, while getting the Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants at home. The best scenario for the Jets would be to win their two home games and split their two road games. We will find out a lot about this team in their week 1 showdown at home against the Cowboys.

In the Jets two other conference games they get the Jaguars at home, while having to go on the road to take on the Ravens. I expect the Jets to be favored in their game against Jacksonville, but I also look for them to be underdogs on the road against Baltimore. Anything less than a split in these two games would be a disappointment.
