New York Jets vs New England Patriots Point Spread

Written September 18, 2009 by Black Widow

Jets vs Pats point spreadThe New York Jets vs. New England Patriots AFC East showdown Sunday is easily the most anticipated game of the week. Both teams are coming off of wins, with the Jets rolling 24-7 over the Houston Texans and the Patriots needing a Tom Brady-like comeback to beat the Bills 25-24. With all the smack talking leading into this one, most NFL fans will be tuning in to catch the action. The NFL point-spreads are set and right now they show New England -3.5 over New York with a Total Set of 46 points.

Head coach Rex Ryan has brought a new attitude to the Big Apple, and it’s spilling over to his players. Ryan replaces Eric Mangini after serving 10 years in Baltimore, guiding one of the best defenses in the game this decade. Right when he got here he wasted no time voicing his opinion, saying he didn’t come to New York “to kiss Bill Belichick’s rings.” Belichick has guided the Patriots to three Super Bowl wins, and he has been his usual self in responding to Ryan’s comments. “I think that’s all not really that relevant,” Belichick said. “The most important thing to us is we’re playing a division game on the road.” Tom Brady isn‘t buying it. “Talk is cheap,” said Brady which was kind of a bold statement coming out of his mouth, but I guess when you win three Super Bowl rings you are entitled to your opinion, and chances are that Brady will back it up on the playing field Sunday.

New England has won eight straight games at New York dating back to 2000, which was Belichick’s first year on the job. The road team won both meetings last year, with the Pats winning 19-10 at New York and the Jets returning the favor with a 34-31 win in New England. Ben Watson was on the receiving end of two touchdowns by Brady in Monday’s win over the Bills, both coming in the final three minutes to complete the comeback after trailing 24-13. The Jets’ defense gave up just 183 yards in their 24-7 win over Houston on Sunday, and Ryan is already making his presence felt as a defensive mastermind. Randy Moss and Wes Welker each caught 12 balls from Brady, with Moss turning his into 141 yards and Welker tacking on 93. But the running game remains a concern, as New England rushed for just 73 yards, their worst total since 2007. Patriots’ linebacker Jared Mayo is likely to miss Sunday’s game after suffering a knee injury in the opener. He led the team with 139 tackles as a rookie last year, so this is a key loss for New England. The defense limited Buffalo to 276 yards last week. But they’ll have their hands full with Mark Sanchez, who threw for 272 yards and a touchdown in his NFL debut. The Jets have the chips stacked against them considering they haven’t won back-to-back games to start a season since 2004, a year in which they started 5-0. Let the smack-talking come to an end, and let’s get it on!
