If you are looking to improve your winning percentage with your picks you’ll need a good solid base of knowledge to get you started. We’ve asked all of our expert handicappers and come up with what we think is a pretty good list of betting tips for successful wagering. This isn’t meant to be a complete list, but it will certainly give you some ideas of what to look for when looking for winners.
Choosing a Sportsbook - Before you even get started making your picks you’ll need a place to make your wagers. We recommending opening accounts at a few sportsbooks so you can shop for lines. Remember that a point or a half point one way or another can be the difference between winning and losing. See our recommended list of sportsbooks for the best places to bet this year.
Betting on Bad Teams - The reason this makes sense in the NFL is that you are normally going to get much better lines on teams that are perceived as bad by the public. The difference between good and bad teams in the NFL is smaller than any other sport, which is one of the things that makes handicapping so difficult. The good news is that you can use this to your advantage if you find the right spots to take these “bad” teams.
Avoid the Chase - A trap that many bettors fall into is chasing their losses. The best example of this is doubling up on the Sunday Night NFL game or on Monday Night Football. There are certainly times when these games are right to bet, but be sure to question if you are talking yourself into making a bet just because you lost your earlier wagers.
Money Management - Choose a plan and stick with it! There are many different ways to manage your bankroll, but the key is to stick with your guns and don’t fall off course. The biggest mistake that people make when betting on the NFL is increasing their bets before their bankroll can handle it.
