NFL Coaching Changes Mean Major Roster Overhauls

Written March 5, 2009 by Jack Jones

kellen-winslowNine NFL franchises have brought in new head coaches, and that has meant some major moves being made to their rosters. These men are probably not done putting their mark on their squads either. Let’s take a look.

Cleveland Browns

It’s hard to believe that Kellen Winslow won’t be the Browns tight end this year, but Eric Mangini traded Winslow to the Tampa Bay Bucs. It was an interesting move since Cleveland doesn’t have a reliable receiver (Braylon Edwards drops too many passes) and Jamal Lewis is showing his age.

Denver Broncos

With Josh McDaniels shopping Jay Cutler, he has stirred up some problems, but it shows that he doesn’t have faith in the Broncos quarterback. However, the former Patriots assistant likes to spread things out, which should mean some big numbers for Cutler and his receivers. Denver also added Correll Buckhalter to the backfield.

Detroit Lions

Expect the Lions to look for a quarterback, possibly with the No. 1 pick in the draft. Wide receiver Calvin Johnson needs somebody to get him the ball, and Scott Linehan can only turn this offense around if he has someone to run it. Duante Culpepper can’t realistically be the team’s answer.

Indianapolis Colts

Tom Moore is still running the offense, but the team will be without Marvin Harrison for the first time in years. Don’t expect Peyton Manning’s production to drop though with Reggie Wayne, Anthony Gonzalez, and Dallas Clark as targets.

Kansas City Chiefs

Some of the biggest moves made so far have been by the Chiefs, who snagged Matt Cassel and Mike Vrabel from the Patriots. It will be interesting to see if Cassel can still be productive throwing to Dwayne Bowe in place of Randy Moss. The team still has to make decisions on whether running back Larry Johnson or Tony Gonzalez will be back.

NY Jets

The Brett Favre era was short lived as he once again enters retirement and wide receiver Laveranues Coles has moved on. That means Kellen Clemens will likely be under center.

St. Louis Rams

The Rams are going to have to rebuild their offensive line in order to create some holes for running back Stephen Jackson. Marc Bulger would sure like some time to throw the ball as well with two bad seasons in the rear view mirror. He might now have Torry Holt either, who is asking for his release.

Seattle Seahawks

Jim Mora and Matt Hasselbeck have to be happy about the team adding TJ Hooushmandzadeh. The passing game should take some pressure off an offense that will rely on a heavy dose of Julius Jones and TJ Duckett.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Without Jeff Garcia the team will rely on Luke McCown at quarterback. He does have Winslow now to team up with wide out Antonio Bryant. The Bucs also signed Derrick Ward from the Giants to help a running game that was banged up due to injuries to Cadillac Williams and Earnest Graham.

Keep an eye on the roster moves made by each team as the NFL odds on who is going to win the Super Bowl will change from now until the first kick.
