NFL Odds – 49ers vs Eagles

Written December 19, 2009 by Hector Garza

Philadelphia (9-4) is flying high coming off of a wild 45-38 win against the division rival New York Giants.  The latest offensive display puts them in commanding lead of the NFC west as well as third in league scoring.  They’ll be welcoming San Francisco (6-7) into the hostile confines of their stadium this Sunday at 4:15 p.m. ET, where our NFL lines have the Eagles as the 7.5 point favorites.  The 49ers aren’t an easy opponent, as they proved to be more than the Cardinals could handle last week in a decisive 24-9 victory.  The total for the game is set for 41, and could easily surpass that mark.

Donovan McNabb threw for 275 yards and two scores to one interception last week, and for the year the quarterback has 18 td’s to seven picks and over 2700 yards.  The last few games the Eagles have been using Michael Vick as play caller as well.  He’s accounted for one passing td and another two rushing, and is happy about seeing his role increase.  Philly hasn’t had a drop in their running game since Brian Westbrook has missed six of the last seven games due to concussions.  RB’s LaSean McCoy and Leonard Weaver have picked up the slack nicely, and have combined for five of the twelve rushing td’s scored.  The offense does a good job finding the endzone and WR DeSean Jackson has been a nice suprise on special teams with two punt returns for scores.  The defense hasn’t had as much success, and is in the middle of the league when it comes to scoring and yards allowed.  But that doesn’t mean that they haven’t been active, with 30 takeaways on the year, four defensive scores and 36 sacks.

San Francisco is coming off a huge defensive performance where they forced eight turnovers and held Arizona to nine points.  The unit intercepted Kurt Warner twice and recovered six fumbles, giving them a league leading 18 in that category on the year.  They’re ranked in the league’s top ten for scoring and rushing defense.  Their biggest weakness is the secondary, which is allowing over 243 ypg, but they do a good job of pressuring QB’s with their 34 sacks.  Frank Gore will be looking to get the running game going, where he’s found success to the tune of 835 yards and seven scores.  He’s also a threat catching the ball, and has 43 catches for ten first downs and 3 more scores.  Alex Smith replaced Shaun Hill as the starter at QB, and is throwing for over 215 ypg with fifteen scores to nine int’s.  Philly’s secondary will have their hands full with the likes of TE Vernon Davis and WR’s Michael Crabtree and Josh Morgan, who account for fifteen receiving touchdowns.

Betfirms has excellent NFL picks for anyone interested.  Both of these teams are coming off big wins and carry momentum into this matchup.  Philadelphia boasts the stronger offense, but the San Francisco defense could easily neutralize that advantage.  I like the Eagles here with the dual threat of McNabb and Vick at the QB position and their opportune D.  They’ll soar to their 10th win in style at home, and you can check out more free NFL predictions at Betfirms.
