NFL Betting: Arizona Cardinals at New York Giants Odds

Written October 25, 2009 by Black Widow

The New York Giants are 5-1 and they will host the 3-2 Arizona Cardinals Sunday night on NBC in a battle between the two previous NFC champions. New York suffered a humbling 27-48 loss at New Orleans last week, while the Cardinals put together their best performance of the season in a 27-3 road win over the Seattle Seahawks. Will the Giants bounce back or can Arizona win a third straight game? NFL odds show that New York is supposed to win by a touchdown as the books have installed the Giants -7 over the Cardinals with a Total Set of 46 points.

Even after giving up 48 points and 493 yards of total offense to the Saints last week, the Giants enter this game with the league’s top-ranked defense. It was the most yards New York has allowed since 1988, which happened to come against the Cardinals. The Giants could not get after Drew Brees, held without a sack in the loss after recording 15 sacks through their first five games. New York enters this one as the fifth-ranked rushing offense in the league, but they were held to just 84 yards on the ground against the Saints. They’ll need to get back to running the football more effectively, while Eli Manning will need to bounce back from his worst performance of the season. You will see Manning target WR Steve Smith, who is tied for the league lead in receptions with 41 to go along with 525 receiving yards, good for tops in the NFC. In last year’s meeting, the Giants won at Arizona by a final of 37-29. Eli Manning was brilliant, completing 26-of-33 passes for 240 yards and three touchdowns. Kurt Warner threw for 351 yards and one touchdown in the loss, and he’ll need more big numbers like that if Arizona is going to try and steal one on the road.

The Cardinals have won back-to-back games, but their last loss came on Sunday Night Football in a 31-10 home setback to the Indianapolis Colts. They will be looking for redemption this Sunday, but they have their hands full considering they have lost 7 of their last 8 visits to New York. The Cardinals were also 0-5 on the East Coast last season, but they did beat Carolina on the road in the playoffs and Jacksonville earlier this year. Arizona is actually leading the league in run defense, allowing just 59.6 rushing yards/game. They’ll need to keep that up against a Giants’ team that loves to pound the rock. The Cardinals are 2-0 on the road this season after their 27-3 win over Seattle, where Kurt Warner completed 32-of-41 passes for 276 yards and two touchdowns. Larry Fitzgerald caught 13 of those completions, which was a career high, and he finished with 100 receiving yards and a touchdown. It was his fifth touchdown of the season to lead all receivers. But Fitzgerald hasn’t done all the damage, as five different players have recorded at least 15 receptions this season.
