NFL Odds, Betting Lines, & Point Spreads: Week 15

Written December 10, 2008 by Steve Janus

Thursday night football this week features a pair of teams that need wins in to stay firmly in the playoff hunt.  The Chicago Bears and the New Orleans Saints are both on the outside looking in right now as far as the playoffs are concerned, but a win could put either one that much closer to competing for the Wild Card in the NFC.  The Bears are favored by 3 points over the Saints.

Green Bay has really fallen apart lately, but they aren’t out of the playoff picture just yet.  They try to get back on track this week on the road against Jacksonville.  Oddsmakers have the Packers -2 against the Jags.

Detroit doesn’t have an easy road to avoid being the first 0-16 in history.  The Lions are 17 point underdogs at Indianapolis this week.  It doesn’t look like it’s their week to notch their first victory of the season.

The Washington Redskins play the Bengals at Cincinnati this week.  Washington is in the middle of the NFC Wild Card race, while the Bengals have been eliminated from playoff contention with their 1-11-1 performance this year.  The Redskins are 6.5 point underdogs at home against Cincinnati.

Tampa Bay and Atlanta have fallen behind the Carolina Panthers in the NFC South race, but both are in the thick of it for a playoff spot.  The Falcons are 3 point favorites over the Bucs in Atlanta this Sunday.

If the regular season ended today the Miami Dolphins would end up out of the playoffs, but just barely.  They can hardly afford a late season loss to the 49ers, who have actually been playing pretty well as of late.  In Miami the Dolphins are 6.5 point favorites over San Francisco.

The Jets need to get back on the winning track after losing in consecutive weeks.  Buffalo still has an outside shot at the playoffs, but they haven’t really been playing like a playoff team lately.  We’ll see what they can do this week at the Jets as 8 point underdogs.

With the playoffs and the division locked up, the Titans will likely rest their starters as much as possible.  That’s probably why they are only 3 point favorites playing in Houston against the Texans.

Two of the best defenses in the NFL meet Sunday when Pittsburgh plays at Baltimore.  The Ravens are 2 point favorites over the Steelers as they look to avenge an early season loss at Pittsburgh.

The Panthers can strengthen their hold on the NFC South with a win over the Broncos, who are trying to solidify a playoff seed of their own.  The Broncos are 7.5 point underdogs at Carolina.

It’s been a rough season for the Chargers and though they aren’t mathematically out of the playoff race, it seems as though it’s only a matter of time.  This week the Chargers play at Kansas City against the 2-11 Chiefs.  San Diego is favored by 5.5.

The Giants already have their division locked up, but they’ll probably keep their starters in against Dallas this week to try to pick up a win and also lock up a first round bye in the playoffs.  Even with the second best record in the NFL, the Giants are 3 point underdogs against the Cowboys in Dallas on Sunday.

The Eagles are favored by 14 points over the Browns on Monday Night Football this week and with good reason.  Philly can inch closer to a playoff birth with a win, while the Browns, at just 4-9 on the season, have been eliminated from any post season consideration.
