NFL Odds: Kansas City Chiefs at Washington Redskins

Written October 18, 2009 by Black Widow

The 0-5 Kansas City Chiefs visit the 2-3 Washington Redskins Sunday in a battle between two teams who are struggling to find their way. K.C. has lost several close games already this season, none more painful then their 20-26 overtime loss to Dallas last week. Washington has lost 2 games to teams that didn’t have a win coming in, and they don’t want to give the Chiefs their first victory of the season Sunday. NFL odds are posted and show Washington -6 over Kansas City with a Total Set of 36.5 points.

Washington is 2-0 at home this season, but both wins came against winless opponents in St. Louis and Tampa Bay. They escaped with a 9-7 win over the Rams and a 16-13 victory over Tampa Bay. The Redskins have losses to the Detroit Lions and Carolina Panthers, two teams with just one win on the season now. Washington blew a 17-2 lead to Carolina in that loss last week, and they gained just 198 yards of total offense. The Redskins have yet to score 20 points this year, and that’s a concern considering they have an offensive-minded head coach in Jim Zorn who couldn’t possibly be more on the hot seat right now. A loss to Kansas City Sunday, and Zorn will surely be out.

The Chiefs came close to ending their 0-5 skid last Sunday against the Cowboys, but wound up with a painful 20-26 defeat in overtime. You have to give Kansas City credit for even forcing the extra period considering they trailed 13-20 with just over 2 minutes to play. Matt Cassel led his team on a 74-yard drive that resulted in a Dwayne Bowe touchdown catch on 4th-and-7 from 16 yards out. This marks the first time the Chiefs have started a season 0-5 in 32 years. Kansas City has the league’s worst defense, giving up 402 yards/game. To make matters worse, they put up an average of just 258 yards/game on offense, good for 30th in the league in that category. Larry Johnson is having a hard time getting going, and injuries to the offensive line are not helping matters. Johnson is averaging just 2.4 yards/carry and has yet to reach the end zone. He’ll need to be productive Sunday to take some pressure off of Cassel and keep the Redskins honest.
